Hi! First of all, let me give you a little of my situation:

My boyfriend is a professional hockey player in the states and he from Winnipeg... and I am from Louisiana.

I just recently graduated in December with my BSN and I am an RN in South Carolina where he was playing. Well, here in about a month we will be moving to his hometown (Winnipeg) for the summer and I would like to work as an RN... but I have come to the realization that I most likely will not be able to. The CRNE is not offered until June, I won't get the results for 10-12 weeks, and we will be moving back to the states in October for him to play again.

From Winnipeg, what is the closest hospital right over the border?? I am thinking of just driving to Warroad everyday (if they have a hospital) so that I can work as an RN this summer.

All comments, advice, and suggestions will be greatly appreciated!! I need all the help I can get!

Warroad's pretty far from Winnipeg, 127 miles or nearly three hours' drive over mostly secondary roads. They do have a hospital there, the Warroad Care Center. There are other closer hospitals, like Kittson Memorial in Hallock, MN; it's about 89 miles or a little less than a 2 hour drive. Then there's Pembina County Memorial in Cavalier, ND that's 100 miles or 2 hours away, and Unity Medical Center in Grafton, ND that's 119 miles or 2 hours, 15 minutes away. Depending on the weather of course. But if you're not going to be doing it during hockey season you might be okay. Unless Highways 59 and I-29 flood.

My son is only a couple of years older than you are, and he grew up in Winnipeg. I wonder if he knows your BF? (PS... don't put his name in a public post, for obvious reasons...)

Thank you so much! I am going to look into those hospitals! I am dreading having to drive back and forth but it is better than not working at all!

I'm not sure if they would know each other. My boyfriend actually grew up in Ste. Anne. So, not exactly in Winnipeg. Your son may know him

No, my son doesn't know him. But my daughter might!

I wouldn't want to be driving that far for work everyday. My commute is about 35 minutes, and that's long enough! Hallock is very small, but rents are pretty cheap, so you may be able to rent a little place there and not do the drive back and forth every day. And maybe for next year, if you and your guy (pun?) are still together, you could write the CRNE in February and be ready to go when the hockey season ends. There are lots and lots of nursing vacancies in Winnipeg and I don't see that changing any time soon...

does your daughter know people from ste. anne? or did she live there?

well, i am pretty sure that we will still be together lol... so yeah, i could write it in february. all of this is just so confusing and so frustrating! i wish i could just work in winnipeg or ste. anne. but, without a license, i would have to be a nurse's aid. and not that i am better than that, but i have worked so hard to get my bsn and i want to use it! well, if you have any more advice, please, feel free...

My daughter went to the University of Manitoba and graduated last May. She worked in the campus bar, was involved in student government and she practically lived at Frank Kennedy arena. She knows a LOT of people. One of her friends is playing CFL football and has just been traded from Montreal to Calgary, which has her very excited because now she'll be able to drive down and watch him play.

I know it's frustrating to wade through all this international trade agreement garbage that should be simple, straight-forward and reasonable and is anything but. Add the post-9/11 security stuff to it and the complexity of it all comes very close to Canadian income tax code! If you do write the CRNE next February, let me know and I'll give you some contacts.

Well, i am probably going to write the CRNE in this June. So if you have any contacts, please let me know. I have been told that the CRNE is a lot harder than NCLEX. Although I didnt find the NCLEX that difficult. But I am going to have to study because a lot of stuff is different in Canada than from here.

But, we will be coming back to MB soon and I cant wait! Like I said before, I am from Louisiana. So, I have never seen snow lol! I am hoping that there will still be snow there when we get back!!

Well, thanks again for all of your help. I sure do wish there was some way for me to work in Canada but... I guess not... I'll have to wait until next summer

sighhhhhhhhhhhhhh I'm looking out my window and thats all I see is SNOW SNOW and more Snow ..... its a white wonderland in Winnipeg today just a balmy -6 with a windchill of -16.
Wheres the warmth hehe whish I was back down in the nice warmth of TX lol
