Preparedness Begins With Prepared Nurses:
Where have all the nurses gone? Difficult working conditions, overburdened public health systems and a looming shortage of registered nurses make preparations to prevent or respond to national emergencies more difficult. New York nurses face huge challenges to their mission to provide quality care. American Nurses Association President Mary Foley will address the challenges facing the country and describe nursing's solutions.
Mentoring Opportunity:
New workshop attendees will have opportunities to learn from seasoned workshop verterans. Please indicate on the registration form if you would like to be a ‘buddy’, or if you are a first-timer that would like to pair up with a ‘buddy.’

9:00 - 10:45 A.M. Legislative Briefing (1.5 Contact Hours)
“Lobbying in New York”

Lobbying materials, including talking points on major issues, will be reviewed to provide the foundation for a successful visit with legislators during the luncheon and/or scheduled appointments.
11:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M. Lobbying Appointments:
Meet your legislators and/or their staff during a visit to discuss issues of concern. Instructions on how to setup an appointment and talking points will be mailed to you with your confirmation letter.
11:00 A.M.- 12:15 P.M. Getting Connected
Meet mentors from your region to plan your afternoon and follow-up activities.
12:15 - 1:30 P.M. Luncheon
Dine with legislators and other nurses from your region and share your concerns and ideas. Discover if colleagues from your neighborhood or place of work are in attendance. Make sure to identify which State Assemblymember and Senator represent you on the registration form.
1:30 - 4:00 P.M. Debriefing
Don't forget to share what you have learned, allowing NYSNA's lobbyists to reinforce the issues and follow-up after your visit. Your assessment of your legislator's views is critically important as NYSNA develops legislative strategies to advance our agenda.
1:45 - 3:30 P.M. Lobbying Appointments/Visit Capitol/Capitol Tour
Meet your legislators and/or their staff during a visit to discuss issues of concern. Observe the Legislature in session. Tour the Capitol, the Empire State Plaza Art Collection or the NY State Museum.
2:00 - 3:30 P.M. Getting Involved Workshop (Optional) (1.8 contact hours)
NYSNA will share the tools you need to carry the messages home to your colleagues, to develop a regional network of nurses willing to work on legislative issues, and to follow-up from workshop activities. This workshop will be held in Meeting Room 5 at the Empire State Plaza.
