Ten Lessons from the Top 100 Most Wired Hospitals

Ten Lessons from the Top 100

By Alden Solovy

One thing is certain: Technology is part of the process of improving care

The nation’s 100 Most Wired Hospitals and Health Systems have better outcomes than other hospitals on four key measures: mortality rates, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s patient safety measures, the Joint Commission’s Core Measures and average length of stay. This is the strongest evidence in the nine-year history of the survey of an association between the implementation and adoption of information technology and the quality and cost of patient care....

1. Improve patient flow
2. Improve workflow
3. Process improvement
4. Measure results
5. Medication management drives quality to the bedside
6. Smart alerts improve care
7. Provide ubiquitous access to digital images
8. Don’t forget the operating room OR and anesthesia are among the last frontiers for electronic clinical documentation
9. Plan for the worst
10. Infrastructure is key to the future

Re: Ten Lessons from the Top 100 Most Wired Hospitals

Cool post! Our hospital is one those "most-wired" ones. This was neat to read.

Re: Ten Lessons from the Top 100 Most Wired Hospitals

Recently had proceedure at hospital that was wired with latest technology. Wow, is that how it is supposed to work! Could see for myself what a good system could do. Even the consents were electronic, so much paper saved. So many times I have struggled with bad systems.
