From ANA news:
Reminder Deadline March 30 for Nurse Education Loan Repayment Program Applications
The Fiscal Year 2006 application for the Nurse Education Loan Repayment Program has been posted on the Health Resources and Services Administration, Department of Health and Human Services (HRSA/HHS) web site. This program repays up to 85 percent of an RN's outstanding student loans in return for full-time employment in a facility determined to have a critical nursing shortage. Such facilities include nursing homes, hospitals and departments of public health. The deadline to apply is March 30.

I have looked at the website for the NELRP, but I am a little confused. I graduate in May 2006. I start work at a qualifying facility in June 2006. When do I apply for this program, do I wait until I have me license and apply next year or am I eligible to apply this year? Any help on this would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Elle

You know, I'm wondering the same thing. I won't have my graduate degree until Dec of this year. The way I read it, you need to have already graduated & be practicing at a qualifying facility at this time to be eligible to apply. Is that right?

Just mailed off the rest of the paperwork this afternoon. They even sent me an e-mail reminding me of the deadline. I just hope my facility qualifies my adminstration thinks it should but I don't know. Oh well I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Good luck everyone.
Not to throw cold water: but I applied and wasn't accepted for this a few yrs ago.
There is a pecking order and it is my understanding that they never get out of the gov't jobs: indian, etc., before they run out of funds. Maybe a few of the hardest 'needs' places, but that's it.

Not that I was expecting to get approved for this .... but I didn't qualify this year. I realize there's not much money to go around, but it woulda been nice.
I have some major debt in school loans, mostly because I went to an out-of-state, private university (from AZ, went to school in TX). So I'll be paying on these loans for years and years to come.
Anyone know of any other types of scholarships or programs that could help with getting nursing loans paid off? I've googled around, but can't really find any concrete information and I'm not sure how to tell what's valid and what's not. All the information that I'm finding is scholarships for current students, not scholarships for paying off loans once you've graduated.

One option is to sign on with a hospital that offers a loan buyback in turn for working for them for X number of years. A lot of facilities that offer tuition reimbursement will also offer a loan buyback if asked.

Is this program available every year? When do sign ups begin for 2007?
