Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center Form A Union

I am on the mail list for SEIU Nurse Alliance. I am not a memeber but I do like to read what is going on in California. I thought you might find this of interest and look forward to the feedback:

On September 19, more than 700 RNs at Pomona Valley
Hospital Medical Center in Pomona, Calif. voted to
form a union with the SEIU Nurse Alliance.

Charlene Nelson, who works in the ER at PVHMC, says,
"This is an incredible victory for nurses and our patients.
Now we can sit down with management and really work
on the improvements we need to provide the best possible
care. Our hospital was the first one built in Pomona,
and now we can make sure we're the best, too."

By forming a union, PVHMC RNs say they are taking the
first steps toward improving patient care and ensuring
professional standards at their hospital. In the next
few weeks, nurses will prepare to negotiate their first
union contract by electing co-workers to serve on a
bargaining team. They'll build upon results of a survey
recently conducted by nurses at the hospital to determine
bargaining priorities on issues such as nurse-patient
ratios, patient care, pay and benefits.

"The cost-cutting pressures in health care today are
enormous," says Jeannie King, RN, who works in PVHMC's
ICU. "By joining SEIU, RNs have gained a strong voice
for ensuring that our hospital puts patients first
by setting staffing levels that are safe for patient
care. Other health care professionals at the hospital
are forming a union too, so we'll all have input into
improvements."

More and more nurses and health care professionals
across California are uniting in SEIU, the nation's
largest health care union.

Nice that they will be able to concentrate on patient care.
