A SANE Approach to Rape
Sexual assault nurse examiners offer victims better treatment. So why doesn't liberal Boulder County have its own program?

It's 1 a.m., and Heather, 18, is trapped in a nightmare. Three hours ago she was raped. Now she sits, together with a police officer and a sympathetic victim's advocate, in the emergency room at a local hospital, waiting to be treated and examined.

As a SANE program coordinator the answer to your questions is yes. You need to be a licensed RN, preferably with acute care experience and some crisis intervention background. You could not practice as a SANE in any program that I'm aware of with completing a SANE didactic course and a pre-defined clinical component. SANE-A certification is recommended and optional in most programs, and cannot be attempted until you have completed training and have had at least 1 yr of SANE experience.
Complete the goals you've set for yourself, and if becoming a SANE continues to appeal to you, I would urge you to persue this. It is the most rewarding work in nursing!

I just graduated from nursing school and will be starting at an ER in July. During my interview, I asked if they would send me to a program to get my SANE and they couldn't have been more excited that I wanted to do this. I have been interested in gaining my SANE since I started nursing school. My research project during my senior year was on the benefits of staffing a SANE nurse in every ER. I know its not practical, but I hope this can happen some day!!

To sit for certification as SANE, one must have at least 2 years RN experience:

Have a minimum of 2 years of practice as a registered nurse in the USA or as a first-level general nurse in the country of licensure.
Per SANE- A application: http://www.iafn.org/displaycommon.cf...articlenbr=210

I did some research, but I'm still a little confused. So, I'm enrolled to begin my training in September and graduate with a BSN. Then I have to work 2 years as a RN in preferably acute care before I can apply for a SANE program. Then can I get my Masters in Forensic Nursing before completing the SANE certification program? Or is the Masters in and of itself a SANE program (in which case I would have to take and pass a SANE exam)? Do I need a Masters at all?

Thank you

You do not need a Master's to become a SANE. It is just a certificate program, you are only required to have an ADN, and to my knowledge you do not have to be an RN for 2 years before you can become SANE certified. Having an Masters in Forensic Nursing is a whole other ball of wax. Hope this helps.
