How to get in to Forensic Nursing

Specialties Forensic

Published

Hi there -

I have ten years experience in nursing, most recently in the operating room, and would like any info on how to get into Forensic Nursing. Any help appreciated!

I Am An Er Rn Also Trying To Enter Into

Forensics, I Think That Becoming S.a.n.e Certified Is The Best Start.

S.a.n.e Stands For Sexual Assault Nures Examiner I Would Check To See If Your Hosp Has A Program Or Check With Local Law Enforcement For More Info Also Check The Local College For Info As They Might Have A Program ... Good Luck Nephronrn:)

I am currently enrolled in the forensic nursing class through Kaplan. From the research I have done the class is a large requirement. There are a lot of web sites you can visit also. IE forensicnurse.org,offfice of victims of crime, SATI Sexual Assault Training, Forensictrak are just a few of them. The course is very interesting and imformative. Cal state is now offering one online also. If you find out anymore information please share it.:rotfl:

How did you like the Kaplan course? I am considering enrolling. I currently do forensics for long term care/geriatric cases which I have found very interesting and yes, I earn a good income. Please let me know.

Thanks

I am a SANE and operate through our ED. I am currently employed by a Children's hospital so most of our exams are naturally related to children. I have never heard of the Kaplan course. Is this SANE training or is this something else. I am also interested in knowing what type of forensics you do in long term/geriatric care. Thanks :coollook:

you said you presently do forensics in ltc/geriatric's. that is interesting, im not a whole lot familiar with forensics..especially with ltc. What exactly is it that you do, and how did you get into a field like that in ltc.

Specializes in Emergency Room/corrections.

I am also a SANE nurse, member of IAFN and working towards a SANE-A certification. There are many avenues available for nurses in the world of forensic nursing you just have to find your niche. Unfortunately, the jobs are not as plentiful as the number of nurses wanting to fill them. With the introduction of CSI Miami, and Law and Order SVU on tv lots of people have the bug. Good luck and hang in there!

Hi, My name is Alicia! I'm 17 and graduating in a year and a half from high school! I'm considering Forensic Chemistry and then Forensic Science! I'm not to sure on what to do! I've contempleted the idea of being an ob gyn nurse for a while now! I love kids and figured that would be a good field to go into! I'm so confused on what to do! I'll be the only one to go to college in my family therefore, my family has not a clue how to deal with anything and they don't understand! I was hoping that one of you or all of you could help me out! It would mean a great deal to me if you could just maybe suggest something or give me information! I just don't know what to do

Hi Alicia,

If you want to become a nurse, you must enroll in an associate, diploma, or bachelor degree porgram. If you do decide to become a nurse, you can always consider the specialty of forensic nursing in the future. It is becoming very popular. Why don't you contact local colleges and see if they can give you some info on their nursing problems. Maybe some of the professors you speak to will be familiar with forensic nursing and can enlighten you. Also, read the posts on this bulletin for more info on this specialty. Good Luck! PM me if you'd like.

I work at a children's hospital in Los Angeles and was told that our forensic team is made up of Social Workers and MDs. I am looking to find a job in forensics outside the acute setting. Any ideas?:uhoh3:
