Anyone applying to USF's (University of South Florida) nursing program?. I feel discouraged because I heard how competitive and rigorous it is.I have a 3.7 GPA. finished about half of my pre-reqs, got A's in all of my science courses. A B in statistics, ethics, and humanities:sarcastic:. I'm currently an ambassador at a community college and volunteering at a hospital. If those aren't good enough to get in the program I don't know what will lol. Is anyone here a USF nursing student? I would love to hear your experiences. I hope I can at least get into USF or my community college. If those fail..then it's off to or technical for me!!

I am a current USF College of Nursing student in the Upper Division program. It is a VERY competitive program but it is not impossible. First, you need to keep that GPA up and try to raise it. Then work on your essay that you need to write for your application, take it to the writing lab to have them go over it. They are great at making suggestions.

Here is the way the selection process goes. There are points awarded for overall GPA (30%), pre-req GPA (30%) and your essay (40%). Once everything is submitted, the waiting game starts. I received notification about 2 weeks after the final day for submission. Also, once the emails start going out, do not be upset if other people are getting their email about being accepted or not and you haven't yet. From the people that I heard from, the ones that received emails first were not accepted. So no news is good news at times.

I believe that the process is similar for the Second Degree program but their notification process maybe different as far as dates and submission requirements go.

At any rate, you have just as good of a chance as anyone else to get into USF. I started at SPC and earned a Gen Ed Associates then transferred to USF. You can also apply now to USF as a pre-nursing student. Then you can talk to the pre-nursing advisor (Andy), she is great! Having her go over all of the classes you have taken would prevent any surprises in the future, like finding out you need an Art class. Also, if you are a USF student, you can submit a request to take Pathophysiology before you are actually accepted into the nursing program. It is a 4 credit class that is normally taken during semester 1. The first semester is 17 credit hours, so reducing that to 13 is a big bonus! I loved not having that extra class in semester 1.

hi, thanks for your suggestions. I am trying to see if I can raise that gpa. The thing is..I don't want to waste my time if I'm not going immmediately into the nursing program. I know it sounds impatient of me but I'm worried I'll spend 3 years in USF still waiting to get into the nursing program :no:. Now can pre nursing students take the prerequisite courses of the nursing program before they're e en considered in?

Before you can apply for the College of Nursing, you must have all of your pre-req's completed. Fall and Summer are the new entering nursing classes. I applied for the Fall and received the email on July 9th about being accepted. Declaring your major as pre-nursing will allow you to talk with the pre-nursing advisor. Make sure that you speak with her, she is a valuable resource.

As far as waiting 3 years to get in.... Worry about what you can control. You GPA, and just as important, your essay. There are people that do not get into the program the first time, others that never get in and those of us that get in the first time applying. BUT you will find that at every nursing program, even the community colleges. You have a good chance of getting into the program. Try not to be impatient.

Thank you and also are there carpools to clinicals being that I don't have a car?

Carpools depend on the group. There are normally 12 students in a clinical group. Clinical sites are normally assigned according to where you live. If you plan on living near campus then you may be assigned to one of the hospitals really close to USF. If that is the case, sometimes the Bull Runner (USF bus) runs to them. In any case, you will have to get that worked out well before the first clinical day. Clinicals normally start at either 6:30am or 7:00am. And if you are late... you are sent home. Miss more than 2 clinicals... and you fail. Some people are doing clinicals less than 5 minutes from their home, so hitching a ride should not be an issue.

Hi guys, I am in the process of applying My overall GPA is 3.8 now my pre reqs GPA will be 3.75 or 3.8 when am finished, I volunteer at an Elementary school. I am super nervous about writing. What are my chances of getting in?

I applied to the Fall 2013 accelerated program. I went to speak with them last Thursday and they said the lowest cumulative GPA that they take is a 3.3 usually. I have a 3.5 and a lot of different volunteer work with diff health organizations. I think it is odd that they do not ask for a CV or references. It is based purely off your 2 page statement and grades. OH WELL!

Also, do any of you know places to live off campus? I was looking around and there is nothing within walking distance to the school. Odd area I thought.

What other programs did everyone apply to? My primary choice is U of Rochester in NY
