USF applicants 2013

U.S.A. Florida

Anyone applying to USF's (University of South Florida) nursing program?. I feel discouraged because I heard how competitive and rigorous it is.I have a 3.7 GPA. finished about half of my pre-reqs, got A's in all of my science courses. A B in statistics, ethics, and humanities:sarcastic:. I'm currently an ambassador at a community college and volunteering at a hospital. If those aren't good enough to get in the program I don't know what will lol. Is anyone here a USF nursing student? I would love to hear your experiences. I hope I can at least get into USF or my community college. If those fail..then it's off to or technical for me!!

Hey Cookie.Cruz, I feel the same way. I am excited about the opportunity to meet new people. After all, we would have a big thing in common and that's nursing school. I hope to meet you and others at orientation :)

On a side note, how was being an ambassador? What did you do? My community college invited me to join but since I worked a part time job :34 hours per week), on top of a full time course load, I thought it might take up too much time. Some of my friends joined though and seemed to really enjoy it.

Being an ambassador meant you had to represent the school well.So you had to learn to work with your teammates and put your leadership cap on :). We also got to hand out fliers, persuade people to attend events, help

plan these events, conduct tours at specific times and dates. There was food involved haha and they helped work around my time if I couldn't do an event I would just tell them. But all in all it was a fun experience I bonded in someway with my team mates , and I've learned that I can actually be a leader when I'm put in certain situations. It was a great program !

Oh @TwentyOnePilots if you get in do you think you'll be working a part time job an if you don't mind me asking what are your living arrangements going to be? I have to find an off campus housing or move in with a friend once I get in ..

That sounds great. Did you include that experience on your essay? Showing them that you are capable of leadership is definitely a plus!

I sure did lol hopefully that made me stand out a little but from the judges..did you see my last post on the thread? I didn't know you replied on another page lol but I wonder if USF will have any scholarships available for us poor folks out there it would really help lol.

Yeah I saw, I sent you a PM. I hope they have scholarships too! We will have to see.

I'm going to have to do off campus housing too. I've been looking into some places, but I would like a place near school and the hospital they match me with. My concern is that we are finding out if we are accepted kind of late I hope there will still be plenty of places to choose from. I asked the university if there are any scholarships and they told me the deadline passed in March. But maybe the nursing program has some scholarships aside from the university! My school didn't have an ambassador program or at least I never heard about it on campus, but I did join Phi theta kappa honor society! Anyone else did?

@Cookie.Cruz The social life is very good especially since students know they will spend the next two years with their classmates. You will all be divided into your clinical groups in which you will form an even stronger bond. The people in your clinical will be the ones you see almost everyday. Pick your seat wisely the first day of class because many students become fiesty with their seats. There are some classmates that room together, I think that's a great opportunity to be in contact with the nursing community 24/7. Many students carpool because some students will be matched to clinicals that are far away from home. Working during the program is strongly discouraged however, some students work part-time weekends. The program is very overwhelming but definitely not impossible. It's all about time management and setting priorities. If you don't learn/retain material as quickly you may want to study beforehand versus a student who learns information quickly. You will have your classmates that will motivate and encourage you just like you will be there for them. It won't be long until you see them as siblings. I suggest small study groups if everyone is going to study and not gossip/talk about other things. I personally like to study on my own and review with other students and quiz each other. Don't hesitate questions in class or after. There is no such thing as a "stupid" question. The reason why I say this is because professors assume that you know the information and resume with the lecture adding to what was being said before. You guys are going to have so much fun while learning because thee professors are very engaging and knowledgeable.

@mely29 I have a question. I took psych my first semester in college and got a B and I took sociology also a year later and got an A. Now I know usf only requires either or. So my question is would they lean more for psych or sociology because I'm trying to determine my GPA. With psych I will have 3.8 with the other B being in micro and with sociology its a 3.9 .

Thank for answering @mely29 one more question do you think my stats are pretty ok? Lol I'd like some type of encouragement and again thank you !

Hi @ecari. According to my OASIS for my classes, it says "Any course in psych, sociology, etc." then at the right it says "Satisfied by Sociology - A" so it looks like they take sociology. So your gpa would be 3.9 I believe. Good job!

I also took both psychology and sociology, and earned A's in both.
