University of Miami Accelerated BSN Program

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hi there! I received my acceptance letter for the Summer 2011 Accelerated BSN Program at UM. I was just wondering if anyone who is already in this program could give me some insight on how they like it. Some of my main questions are is it possible to work part-time throughout the program, and is it difficult to obtain scholarships, etc.? I am from Miami, but I currently live in Ohio, so I have been going back and forth as to whether I should stay here or go back to where it's sunny. :) Anyhow, if anyone who is going through the program or has heard anything about the program has any info they can give me, it would be greatly appreciated!! THANKS!

Congratulations! I just now posted on another thread in this forum before I saw this about Miami applicants. You will probably see it next to this one on the list. Looking forward to hearing more. I am still waiting a decision.

Congrats on your acceptance!! I'm currently in the accelerated program at UM right now going into my final semester - woo hoo! It's going to be a very long, hard, rigorous year but is definitely worth it in the end (I hope!) Overall I like the program and the school a lot. Before starting the program I thought it was near impossible to learn enough to become a good nurse, but I can't even begin to explain how much I've learned - it's incredible. The classes are awesome, the teachers are amazing (for the most part). The only complaint I have is the administration - they are overall very rude and not very caring to the students, so it's important to stand up to them if you want something changed (strength in numbers!)

As for working...definitely not. We had a couple students try and were either unsuccessful or their grades were lowered. Especially being that you'll be starting in the summer where the semester is only 10 weeks long is a killer - multiple quizzes or tests weekly - you won't have time. Second semester things are a little better; you aren't as busy. I worked 3 days a week for only 3 hours at a time caring for a quadriplegic and that wasn't so bad, so you may have time to squeeze something in, but don't overdo it.

As for scholarships...the only one I really know of is the UM scholars program. You have to apply and it's very competitive but if you get it, they pay for your entire program, but in return you have to work at their hospital for 3 years. In my opinion it's totally worth it being that you come out with NO debt and a guaranteed job.

Anyways, let me know if you have any questions. Best of luck with everything and be sure to rest up now while you can : )

I received in the mail a transfer credit evaluation, but I have not received an aceptande letter yet. Did you receive this evaluation before being accepted? Thanks!

i did not receive a letter like that, but for anything i was missing i received an email. all i had to submit was proof i was taking chem this semester.

i think it depends who you got the letter from, the nursing dept or undergrad admissions. you can be missing stuff from undergrad admissions office and still have the nursing dept review your application. if it was from nursing you probably need that completed before they make an acceptance decision.

Thanks for the information. What I received was a Transfer/Advanced credit evaluation showing all the credits that have been transferred. I do not have any prerequesite pending.

Thanks!

did you know that "application documents received" is a link? have you clicked on it? i click on mine and i see the following:

your application has been sent to the admission committee for review. we appreciate your patience during this time and will mail your admission notification according to the application option you chose. for information about admission notification dates, go to http://www.miami.edu/deadlines.

i have also long completed all my prereqs and submitted all required docs. it's been that way since late nov. but i continue to patiently wait ... :anbd:

You're right, I have been waiting a while. I sent in my application early Nov. You peaked my curiosity and I called them. I was told decision letters will be going out within this week and next week. The person on the other end was not sure how candidates will be notified first (email, letter, or both).

So, I guess it's all about hanging tight right now!! :clown:

just out of curiosity, did they say those letters will be going out for early nov applicants or just in general. this week is my 4th week (excluding the dec 21st thru jan 3rd) break....on here i saw some people say they see it online first, but i guess it depends who is working that day:lol2:

please make sure you keep in touch...read my other post if you can btw and lmk what you think.

im still thinking a fb group will be easier, but im afraid to jinx myself by creating one before finding out if im accepted. LOL!

They did not specify, sounds to me like it is a general release of decisions. I suspect they have been getting many calls about this so they were reluctant to give out any more information than necessary. The woman on the line did make a point of letting me know that they don't give admissions decisions over the phone. I told her I was aware of that, and was simply trying to find out what the status was on applications. I tried not to appear too intrusive on the call.

A FB group is only useful for students who are definitely attending UM. Yeah, sounds like a jinx move to me if you create one beforehand! :D
