University of Miami Accelerated BSN Program

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hi there! I received my acceptance letter for the Summer 2011 Accelerated BSN Program at UM. I was just wondering if anyone who is already in this program could give me some insight on how they like it. Some of my main questions are is it possible to work part-time throughout the program, and is it difficult to obtain scholarships, etc.? I am from Miami, but I currently live in Ohio, so I have been going back and forth as to whether I should stay here or go back to where it's sunny. :) Anyhow, if anyone who is going through the program or has heard anything about the program has any info they can give me, it would be greatly appreciated!! THANKS!

Paco69,

The scholarship application is due feb 1 . 3 completed recommendation forms are required but should be easy to get because it is not a letter just answering questions about you the applicant that they will probably match in the interview if selected. i say turn in the app whether you get the acceptance letter yet or not. You never know if you get it the 5th or something crazy, and they hadn't even opened your scholarship package up yet. Its all on the website.

Best of luck to all.

Good to know, thanks. But when it comes down to it, we won't hear word about the scholarship until months from now. Which means I would have to pay a deposit on a gamble that I MIGHT get the scholarship, and since I cannot attend UM without the scholarship, it becomes a pretty risky gamble. The deposit is too pricey for me to do that and risk losing it. My ideal situation would be to be able to make a decision to attend a school concurrent with an award letter which lets me know how much I expect the education to cost me. I guess UM may not happen that way. I am not prepared to take out huge loans in lieu of a full scholarship. This is why all my other schools are state universities. I thought things were going to work out differently, I prob would not have applied to UM if I knew this was going to happen.

Prospective students MUST have been awarded a Bachelor's degree with a MINIMUM 3.0 GPA. Post baccalaureate and graduate classes are NOT calculated into the Bachelor's degree GPA. The official GPA is the GPA calculated by the Bachelor's degree awarding institution."

Thanks for reminding me why I chose not to apply to FAU. I earned my bachelors @ 20 years ago and my GPA for that alone does not reflect the type I student I am today. My prereq GPA reflects my potential because it is comprised mostly of coursework I completed within the last year. My bachelor's GPA is over 3.0 but not high enough alone to be competitive in today's application pools. With post-baccalaureate work added in, it's a much better GPA. All the schools I applied to take cumulative GPA or prereq GPA into account. So forget FAU!

Thanks Grace,

did you apply to FAU as well? FAU is my first option, but I know is very competitive. I have a MBA from FAU, and my gpa is 3.88, but I scored 76% in the vocabulary part. My average for the HESI is 88.7%. I hope they still consider my application. I wish I could know now before sending the deposit to Miami, but knowing how competitive FAU is. I should just focusing on Miami. what have your heard of FAU and their statitics? Thank you!

Hey lmaria3, congrats on receiving your MBA and your high GPA, that is phenomenal!

I only applied to the FAU accelerted program and I'm praying I get in. It's the only school I applied to and the only program I want to go to due to location, price, and reputation of program.

I received above 92 on all sections so I don't know about your situation but I thought you couldn't even apply unless you had an 80 on each section. I am thinking with so many applicants that they would take their requirements seriously but I don't know. I guess we will all find out February! Good luck and I can't wait to see everyone saying the good news here on allnurses that they were accepted! Also, I thought they only accepted 30 for the accelerated, where did the 42 number come from??

I think I read about the 42 spots in one of these blogs. They told me I could still apply if one category was a few points under the requirement if I had other compensating factors such as a high GPA. I have heard that they give more weight to the GPA than to the HESI scores. I have heard cases of people with a very high HESI score, but the GPA is not that high and do not get admitted. let's see what happens. I am happy that I was admitted to UM. I am not over confident FAU. I will keep you posted :) I wish they could let us know soon.

oh okay well I hope both you and I find out that we were accepted soon!!

Congrats again on UM!

Where can you check the status of your application?? I went to UM for undergrad in 2005 and had to "reapply for admission" in order to apply for the accelerated program, when I log into "myUM" I don't see anything about my application- NOTHING at all... *****?

I applied for the accelerated program in October (for summer 2011) and they haven't sent me anything... I never got anything saying that my application is complete or incomplete.. I had to keep bugging them and I'm STILL not even sure. I called and the person told me I should hear about a decision by MARCH! and originally Ms.******* told me I would know by Dec., i emailed her regarding this and, of course, didn't hear back. I'm thinking they're delaying their decision because I have 4 pre-reqs outstanding that I'm taking this spring. I quit my job in public health to take these pre-reqs and if I dont get in to the program I'll be screwed in may.. basically unemployed and unable to go back home to miami (since there are NO jobs there).

When you go my UM. Click on dcuments received, and then you will be able to determine what documents they are missing. If you receive a message that states application has been sent to commitee for review, so you should be ok just be patient. Keep calling, or try to get in contact with the director of admission, he or she might be able to give you more accurate information. I hope you find out soon about your admssion application.

thanks lmaria3, but I dont have an "admissions" box in myUM, and i dont have a docs received...anyone else have this problem? maybe it's cuz i'm an alum? weird, but now im getting nervous that something went wrong

You should have received a letter that they got your application, along with a cane Id for miami.edu/myum when u log in there mid screen it should either a) show an acceptance letter or b) have a link that says "view your admissions information" hope this helps

Hey everyone! Is anyone on FB? I wanted to start a group for the Accelerated BSN program for May 2011. :)

There are quite a few of us on fb and I wanted to create the group as well. However (I can only speak for myself and paco69 lol) I don't want to join a group like that until I know I'm accepted. Don't want jinx it! Haha

Exactly! And what's the point of joining the group if you later discover that you were rejected or you decide to go to school elsewhere? I like allnurses.com just fine for now :)

Hi Grace,

I am planning on sending my scholarship application by the middle of this week. I really hope I can get it because I do not want to be in debt after I graduate. Do you know how difficul is to be selected for this scholarship? I just want to be prepared. In case I am not selected, what are our other possibilities? I guess financial Aid (Stanford loans since we already have a bachelor.) I have heard that they just give you 12,500 per year, and since this will not cover the value of the tuition. I would have to go for private loans. do you know of any other type of financial aid available? Let's pray we can get this Scholarship. :)
