school of nursing and health studies

nursing requirement

[color=gray]the school of nursing and health studies requires all students to have a laptop, uniforms and to sign up for the student email system before the beginning of classes.

shoes, stethoscope and pen light

[color=gray]all students are responsible for purchasing their own stethoscope, pen light and all white leather shoes with a back.

uniform information

[color=gray]the uniform must be purchase through gelscrubs using the form attached.

laptop minimum requirement

[color=gray]all laptops must meet the following minimum requirements:

window base machine

  • pentium d, 2.8ghz/800mhz fsb or greater (intel core duo if windows vista installed)
  • 1mb cache
  • windows xp professional, sp2 or greater
  • 1gb ram if windows xp installed (2gb if windows vista installed)
  • 40gb hard drive (60gb if windows vista installed)
  • cd-rw/dvd drive
  • 802.11b wireless lan card
  • microsoft office 2007
  • internet explorer 6.0 or higher
  • microsoft .net framework 2.0 or higher

apple base machine - not advisable

[color=gray]apple notebooks are not advisable for nursing students as the required hesi exams are not compatible with the mac operating system. also, elsevier (the company that provides the hesi exams) does not provide support for bootcamp and does not recommend running their testing software on it, nor on any pc emulator. therefore, technical support for notebooks running bootcamp will be very limited at the school level as well. students who take hesi exams on a mac through the bootcamp software or via any pc emulator do so at their own risk.

if a student still decides to use an apple laptop despite this disclaimer, they must make sure that it meets the following minimum requirements with sufficient time prior to their first hesi exam:

  • pentium d, 2.8ghz/800mhz fsb or greater (intel core duo if windows vista installed)
  • mac with an intel processor
  • mac os x " leopard " or higher
  • boot camp software properly installed and tested
  • have available cd with valid copy of windows xp sp2 or higher
  • on the windows side make sure that internet explorer 6.0 or higher and microsoft .net framework 2.0 or higher are installed
  • be sure to " activate " the copy of windows installed

[color=gray]student laptops must be fully functional prior to arriving to class for an exam or quiz. it is highly advisable that they meet the model and specifications recommended by the university's information technology department in order to qualify for the most comprehensive technical support available through the " canenet connection " mentioned in the "technical support for student laptops" section below. to ensure that these requirements are met, we strongly recommend that students purchase "i.t. approved" laptops through the technology product center (tpc), located at:

Hi K.redondo. I feel like I have been in the dark about requirements too. I haven't heard anything yet about financial aid, but I hope the info above helps you. If you want I can forward it to you, just send me your e-mail adress. I'm just hoping the program will be better when we are actually in it.

HI Jes,

Did you apply for summer loan? YOu have to complete summer loan request on the Financial Aid website. Go to undergrads, forms, summer loan request.

Hope it helps

Hi K.rdondo

I had to call several times to find out about the shoes. I got the firt email but did not get the second one until today. They asked if i was recently accepted, but I was accepted begining of January.

Jes as far as financial aid I got my award amount but it is just enough to pay for tuition and books. I applied for a got a sallie mae signature loan ontop of stafford, but UM certified less than half the amount I was approved for. I have no idea how they expect someone to pay for school and have nothing to live with.

Its pretty crazy..on the website UM lists cost of books for two semesters at $1200.00, thats impossible that 600.00 can cover a semester of books, at least not anybody taking science or math courses.

Good luck.

yes, I did submit the summer loan request (a long time ago). I also applied for the signature loan through sallie mae. UM has not told me how much federal loans I can have though. So, I am waiting to hear from them. What do you mean UM did not certify you the amount you need? I am planning on using my signature loan for tuition, books, and also living expenses (rent, food, etc). Did they okay enough for all this? I was approved through Sallie Mae so I assume that I will get the amount needed to pay rent, tuition, etc. I am worried a bit now.

I was approved for x amount then they wait for the school to certify that you are attending and costs and what not, they (UM) cerified me for less than half that. So that combined with stafford pays my tuition but not much else. I thought somehow the tuition was already taken out or something but when I went on the sallie mae site it showed the approved amount and then the certified amount. I am talking with someone to find out how to get it raised bc without it I cant go. Sorry if I cause any worry, have you called the financial aid office?

okay thanks. When did you hear from UM about this? Did they e-mail you or did you notice it on my UM? Let me know what you find out.

I went on my UM and looked under awards. I'll let you know.

Hi Jesleigh

I would buy a plan white shoes to be on the safe side..it could be a sneakers..clogs..or one of those ugly looking nursing shoes:)..once its is comfortable and white...Also...sign into myum go under student then financial and your page should list your tuition fee of approx $13600 for the summer..yeah i know i almost got a heart attack:)...its due by may 14th...that page also has information about the $6200 that you are getting for the summer from finanacial aid...The school does not tell you anything in the appropriate time frame...especially with us being out of state...its not like we can go visit an advisor on campus every minute...I found out about my background check form this site..and i had to call the head of financial aid last week...to request that our financial aid be release now rather than two weeks from now...i totally expected better communication, for the price of the program...i pray that the professors are better communiator and all this is just pre program administrative loopholes...But just log onto um website..myum and start clicking on everything..u should get some infor and also you would see your class schedule...

Did anyone call to get specs on shoes to see if we can have tennis shoes

Letter was supposed to be leather in the email LOL. That's all I know, I got all nike's white leather "athletic" type.

I also got the "run around" with respect to immunizations and financial aid/scholarships. They only sent out the immunization requirements via email a few weeks ago. Some of these things take months for a series of shots. Same goes with the background check. It takes some time, too. Fortunately, I did my own research here on allnurses.com and started on these things long before the notices were emailed.

Compared to the nursing program at SUNY @ Binghamton, where I declined a spot to attend UM - the UM program seems poorly organized on an administrative level. Nobody I've spoken with at UM seems to know the answers to the important questions or goes out of their way to be of assistance. Binghamton sends out tons of documentation and all kinds of emails about what is required, housing, scholarships, campus life, etc. And they connect the nursing students with each other via email. If I hadn't already moved here from California to attend UM, I would reconsider.

But I still have hope that the UM academic/clinical program itself will be all that it claims to be. And I am excited about seeing the facility. It seems really "state-of-the-art." And Miami is pretty cool. I love living right on the ocean.
