University of Miami Accelerated BSN Program

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hi there! I received my acceptance letter for the Summer 2011 Accelerated BSN Program at UM. I was just wondering if anyone who is already in this program could give me some insight on how they like it. Some of my main questions are is it possible to work part-time throughout the program, and is it difficult to obtain scholarships, etc.? I am from Miami, but I currently live in Ohio, so I have been going back and forth as to whether I should stay here or go back to where it's sunny. :) Anyhow, if anyone who is going through the program or has heard anything about the program has any info they can give me, it would be greatly appreciated!! THANKS!

The reason she told me I was accepted is because I received a credit evaluation. In their website they state that they do not give credit evaluations until someone has been accepted so I called her to find out why I received one. She said that was weird because normally you receive an acceptance letter before the credit evaluation so she checked and told me you have been accepted bla bla bla, but I will not feel confident just until I see the letter. I will keep you posted.

The deadline for the scholarship is on February 1.

Pfft! Oh lovely. And the application probably requires recommendation letters that I will have no time to get? Winning Powerball seems so much more realistic now ...

Which means if I am accepted, I must pay a deposit even before knowing whether or not I get this scholarship. In my situation, it seems too much of a gamble ... double

Do you know how much is for the deposit? is this refundable if we decide to go for other chool? This is the website where you cand find info about the scholarship. I am going to start working on getting everything so I have everything ready either way.

Lmao no I'm not an overachiever! I took the GMAT back in august when I decided to go to grad school and schools are still sending me stuff by mail and email!!!! Izo, I guess that's why you were the exception because as Paco stated they r getting REALLy impatient both by phone and email!!!! Btw the femur joke went right over my head....lol

Hi everyone:

Lmaria3,

Unfortunately the $300.00 is non refundable( I know because I had to pay it), and is due within 2 weeks of receipt of the letter. Also just so everyone knows the background check is gonna be $95.00 out of your pocket you will never see again! Lame i know. Hope there are no more hidden fees, like clinical placement or some crap or i'll scream ! lol

Paco69,

The scholarship application is due feb 1 . 3 completed recommendation forms are required but should be easy to get because it is not a letter just answering questions about you the applicant that they will probably match in the interview if selected. i say turn in the app whether you get the acceptance letter yet or not. You never know if you get it the 5th or something crazy, and they hadn't even opened your scholarship package up yet. Its all on the website.

Best of luck to all.

Thanks Grace,

did you apply to FAU as well? FAU is my first option, but I know is very competitive. I have a MBA from FAU, and my gpa is 3.88, but I scored 76% in the vocabulary part. My average for the HESI is 88.7%. I hope they still consider my application. I wish I could know now before sending the deposit to Miami, but knowing how competitive FAU is. I should just focusing on Miami. what have your heard of FAU and their statitics? Thank you!

i figured the background check and non refundable fee, but what about physical? nursing physicals are EXPENSIVE!!!!! at the school i used to work for i know they spent a couple hundred if they werent already healthcare professionals between shots, xrays, etc etc.

lmaria,

Congrats on being accepted to UM first of all. Yes I also applied to Fau, but doubt I will get in. My Hesi stats were great but GPA stats def not up there like you. However I dont think they look at MBA GPA just bachelors.

Admission Decision Factors

This is a limited-access program and we receive many more qualified applications than available spaces. The key factors considered when making admission decisions include:

Prospective students MUST have been awarded a Bachelor's degree with a MINIMUM 3.0 GPA. Post baccalaureate and graduate classes are NOT calculated into the Bachelor's degree GPA. The official GPA is the GPA calculated by the Bachelor's degree awarding institution."

Collected from: Florida Atlantic University - Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing - Future Students

I am hoping they can overlook that 76% on Vocab because I know that was my poor section as well (88%) Others 96,98,94. I have heard the same comments as you, that it is impossible to get into. I much prefer the UM just because of the actual program, but if i were choosing based on economical costs, FAU would be my bet!

Yunas,

I havent been contacted by the College of Nursing as yet. I dont think they will start contacting us until after all the admissions decisions have been sent out. I have been reading posts from last year, and going to miami.edu/sonhs/students to get my info. So far I haven't heard anything about a physical. I saw the immunization and CPR requirements though, but those I already have as I so CNA work pro re nata while in school. If you find anything out be sure to let me know though !!

My GPA for my bachelor is 3.88, and the MBA 3.7. I know they will not look at my MBA at all. Let's see what happens, but I am not confident either, just 80 seats for 900 applicants between accelerated and traditional. And I believe, just 42 spots for accelerated. I will keep you posted. I think they will let us know by the mid of February.

lmaria,

I keep thinking when did nursing school get so competitive? Im losing my mind with this waiting game! I wish they would have asked for a resume or something you know. Its all a numbers game. What did you study in undergrad if you don't mind me asking? The email said by Feb 28 they will send out decisions to all applicants. I know they use HESI to predict how well you will do in the program, and also your pre requisite GPA so hopefully u will be A-ok =)

sure, My bachelor is in Business. I know what you mean. I just cannot wait until and I am actually in the program. I am tired of waiting and feel this uncertainty. Let's just hope for the best :)
