J Bean, is the 26 an hour your base pay or with the weekend and shift differential? I know what you mean about struggling - I have two kids and make $17 an hour at my current job. I am lucky I have a low mortgage payment, but everything else just eats it up. For me, at least when I go into nursing, when I need extra money I can always find somewhere to work overtime - not an opportunity at my current job.
Laced, I am going to Polk Community College. I am not nervous and excited yet because I've done regular college before - but I will be once I start nursing school!

I moved here from Louisiana after Katrina, and nurses there average about $60,000/year. Before the storm, you could buy a small but decent house in an OK neighborhood in New Orleans for under $100,000. The market has changed since, as most of those neighborhoods flooded, but I could still afford to buy there. Here in Tampa, nurses make about $10,000 less according to salary.com. Yet a small but decent house in an OK neighborhood is over $200,000. So not fair.

I guess relative to many other jobs it probably pays well...but it's still barely a living wage with expenses being what they are. Have you looked into anything like working through an agency or doing travel nursing but only taking jobs in the local area? Or even moving to somewhere with better pay? I'm certainly going to consider all of those things when I graduate.

Wow I know what you mean when you say people thinkg 20/hr is great pay. It's funny because there are people here making 10/hr and raising families on it. Seriously, wall mart workers makes like 13/hr stocking food. WTH is that.
P.S. What's some of the greates ICU's to work at in Northern Florida. I live in St. Augustine and I'm willing to relocate around florida.
