Moving to Northport, Port Charlotte Area

U.S.A. Florida

Published

:specs:We are currently thinking about moving to Florida from PA (tooo many taxes here!!!). My in laws live in Northport and seems like a nice place to live.

Im looking into entering a nursing career (currently in customer service call center). Ive done tons of research for LPN. And Manatee Tech seems like they have a great LPN program. Only 10 months! And not that expensive at all!!!! HAs anyone else gone to that school for LPN program and do you live in Northport area?

I know the tech school is about an hour away from in laws(maybe a little less).

Is Northport a nice area? How is the housing there also. Im excited to enter a new career and may actually be able to buy my FIRST HOUSE! and buy a NEW car hopefully! thanks

Hi there,

I live way down south (Fort Lauderdale area)...but wanted to welcome you to Florida. The Florida housing market has been out of control for the past few years, but with the economy being crappy, it seems that prices are starting to come down a little. Let us know how you are doing.:redpinkhe:icon_hug:

Hello there!

I live in Northport, bought a house here 3 yers ago (before the prices were nuts) I love it. Previously lived in Sarasota, hated the traffic, having neighbors ontop of you,did I mention the traffic? I am an RN who works for Tidewell hospice as a case manager, love it, they are awesome to work for. All the nurses I know that went to Manatee Tech are tops, they get a great education and great experiences.

North Port is a very large area, the houses are scattered, so depending on where you go you may or may not have neighbors. We have our fair share of crime, like any other town, but not as bad as the bigger cities. Prices on houses are now starting to come down (still over priced if you ask me), but a lot of home owners are really begging to deal. I like this town because we are far enough away from 'city life', but close enough to still get whatever we need. The only oddity is the very large bobcat that roams through our yard every now and then and having to bungee cord our garbage can shut to keep raccoons out. Not entirely what I was raised with, speaking of which, I also come from PA, the Scranton, Wilkes-Barre area, where do you hail from? Trust me, you WILL NOT MISS THE WINTERS!!!! Welcome to Florida !

Im currently near Harrisburg. After todays drive into work, I CANT wait to get to Florida. Good to know about Manatee Tech! Thanks! My in laws currently live in NorthPort too! So Im excited to move there, hopefully this summer or fall.

Thanks for your reply!

Hey, I'm from northeast PA, too. I was born around Scranton and raised in Wayne County. My last winter there I was in thigh-deep snow digging my car out ... AGAIN. I had enough. Packed up and headed south.

As for North Port, it's grown quite a bit in the last 5-7 years and is becoming a very nice area. It's quiet enough where you can enjoy your home, but not so far from modern conveniences. You're also close to Sarasota ... it's a great little town. Check out downtown when you have the chance.

You'll enjoy calling your relatives to complain how "cold" you are when the temp dips below 70. :-)

I surely will NOT miss the winters here, when we move. I cant wait. I cant get down there soon enough. Have to wait for step son to graduate high school, then we will assess when we will move there. Gives me some time to lose weight. Again I cant wait.

Hi,

Just wanted to mention that SCTI the vocational school in Sarasota county has an excellent LPN program. It's got a much better reputation than the Manatee school--and it's much closer to North Port. I also have a friend that graduated not long ago from the technical school LPN program in Port Charlotte and said it was an excellent program. I would consider looking into both of those schools...

Good luck! :)

scti=sarasota county technical institute? whats the program (school)called in port charlotte? any websites for those schools?

i actually couldnt find any schools except manatee tech ins. before when i was researching. if you can let me know. i will check them out for sure! thanks!

Yes, when I went to SCTI, it was called Sarasota Vo-Tech. That was back in the stone-age! lol...it's an excellent program--tough, but you'll know your stuff when you graduate, and will not have to worry about passing boards. I heard the same about Charlotte Vocational Technical Center in Port Charlotte, FL. Either one of those would be a good option to look into--much closer too. I would think the Port Charlotte school would be closer to North Port...

Hope that helps!

THANKS!!!! for the info. I researched both schools, and will research more on them. Seem pretty good so far. Id like to go somewhere closer to NorthPort. Thanks for the recommendations, I really appreciate it. :typing

I have been waiting for this thread! I lived in North Port for 6 years, but due to financial meltdown after hurricane Charley and the cannibalism that ensued, we moved to Tennessee. I LOVE IT TOO!!! I MISS IT TERRIBLY! Okay, I got that out of my system...anyway, I went to Charlotte Technical Center and in my opinion, there was no better education! Even up here, people are impressed that I graduated a Florida nursing school...they have a reputation for being tough. I cannot recommend CTC highly enough! By the time you finish (also 10 months total time) the NCLEX will be like just another day. Also, if it is still the same as it was in 2003, you will test at Gold Bank right on the corner of 41 and Toledo Blade, right around the corner from the school. I worked at Peace River Medical Center when it was still St. Joe's Hospital. They sponsor CTC students if you contract a year of work after you graduate. If you are going to apply, do it soon because there may be quite a wait list. You did not mention if you have children, if you do I need to PM you about the schools and what it is like to raise a child there. I wish you the best of luck and I am so glad that there will be someone else living there that loves it the way I do. Feel free to PM me with ANY questions...I am a treasure trove of info for that area!:yeah:

HELLO,

I live in North Port, I have lived there for about 16 yrs now, and my parents live in Port Charlotte.

If you want to go to the best school; Charlotte Technical Center has an excellent program. They have a beautiful new building and depending where in North Port you live, it is quite close to the campus. SCTI is further away, and yes the program is good, but as far as my evaluation of a better nurse, the Charlotte Technical Center puts out a far more professional, competent nurse.

I am a new RN grad from Edison College, and the LPN and RN students worked well with each other. there are three hospitals in the Port Charlotte area, and one North in the other town Vence, called Venice Regional. I hope you find happiness here. Moving here to Florida from Indiana has made me a success.
