Im currently near Harrisburg. After todays drive into work, I CANT wait to get to Florida. Good to know about Manatee Tech! Thanks! My in laws currently live in NorthPort too! So Im excited to move there, hopefully this summer or fall.
    Thanks for your reply!
We moved to North Port from NH almost 2 years ago. I miss NH a lot but this is a nice quiet town. My husband built our house here and we bouth the land just before the prices went through the roof. now, the prices are way down and like someone else said, home owners are begging to deal right now. Now is the time to come here and buy a house.

I was in nursing school for 3.5 years in NH and I moved here and they will not take my nursing theory credits as transfers at MCC. The school is only about 15 minutes away from me. (Venice branch) MCC does not take transfer students. They are making me retake the nursing theory's over again (2 classes) and then I will take the the other and I will be done. I finished all but those classes to finish the AS degree. I am on the wiat list and they say it is 2 years. We will see. I have excellent grades but MCC told me that that does not matter as they do not accept transfers. I have to go to the bottom of the list like everyone else. I am not worried about it though. There are so many hospitlas around here and since I have been a stay at home mom for so many years I thought I needed to go back and help my husband out with the bills. I am applying at a hospital in Port Charlotte as a PCA. I hope I get it. I am no longer CAN lisenced but I have the nursing school clinicals and previous CAN experience behind me. Wish me luck!
Welcome to FL when you get here. It is a great area.

    Hi,

Just wanted to mention that SCTI the vocational school in Sarasota county has an excellent LPN program. It's got a much better reputation than the Manatee school--and it's much closer to North Port. I also have a friend that graduated not long ago from the technical school LPN program in Port Charlotte and said it was an excellent program. I would consider looking into both of those schools...

    Good luck!
Hi FL-Nurse. I think you may be referring to the MCC in Bradenton. That one is about a little more than an hour from North Port. But, the MCC in Venice is only about 15-20 minutes depending on where in North Port you live. Sarasota is at least 45 minutes away.
  3. Down here, count your blessings if you get to work for Tidewell as a CNA. Best company, best benefits, best experience. SCTI is number one but tough as eating leather. Going there was mind twisting, but you come out as a super nurse. And the industry knows it.

Also I heard rumors that SCTI/LPN was going to move to Venice in the future.

  5. I am so excited having read this thread. I am starting at Charlotte tech in Jan. 09! I have lived in Englewood more off than on over the past 30 years and will be moving back from Orlando to do the program. I had a very good feeling about CTC after my research and talking with the director.

  7. I hear CTC is great. I was going to take a test there recently to get my LPN and then wait on the RN list for MCC but I had one issue with CTC. Since the LPN is not a degree program but a certificate, I would have to take A&PI and II and all the other classes (gen. eds) I have already taken. They would make me do the entire program even though I was only 2 semesters from graduating the RN degree program in NH. I was a 4.0 student. there is no reason I should take all the gen/ eds over again. I was already accepted to MCC and they are making me take a math class (because I an transferring from out of state) and then I will be on the wait list for the RN program. That is more acceptable to me than taking every all over again.
  8. If you have any suggestions on hospice and home health companies...I would love some input.

As a former Tidewell employee I can tell you it was the best job I every had. Best supervision, training and atmosphere. Alot of the hype sounds like hype, but the concept and substance is actually true.

The new employee training is a bit stiff, with good reason. They want the best of the best, and also want you to have the tools to be the best.

    Good Luck!
  9. I have a friend who was just hired by Tidewell. She loves it already and she just finished her 2 weeks of training in Sarasota. She says the benefits are out of this world and cost nearly nothing. She is a CNA til she gets her business associates degree. .

  10. Tidewell Hospice is currently undergoing many changes as their CEO has recently changed. The new CEO has a background in accounting. One of the major changes I heard today is that the RNs in the Hospice houses are now all Salary and get paid for 36 hours per week even if they have to stay late to do charting. They are getting pretty finicky with their supplies as well. The benefits aren't what they used to be either. Morale seems to be low from most of my coworkers.

It feels to me that the focus has changed within this company from the patient first to the bottom line first. I understand the need to balance the budget and not spend more than you make. But the focus should be patient and their needs first.

Tidewell is nonprofit and yes they are EXTREMELY concerned with their public image. They even require business attire or scrubs when entering office buildings or attending a meeting on your off day. The office buildings are for employees only not patient and families so this makes no sense to me. So no jeans or t-shirts on your off day if you have to stop in the office or go to an employee meeting.
