MDC Fall 2011 - PART TIME Program

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hi Everyone,

So far it appears like I've only been accepted into the part-time RN program at MDC.edu (Miami Dade College) for August 2011 (Fall 2011).

There is another LONG thread for MDC Fall 2011, but it isn't specific to the part-time program. I'm not sure if other students who have been accepted to the part-time program will start collaborating, but if they do, this might be one good place to start!

Sincerely,

Fem

P.S. Well, it has taken me 3 (three) tries to create a new discussion thread. I'm hoping this is in the proper place & location. I'm hoping I get some students post here. Collaboration is a wonderful thing.

NRSGRL:

Ok, thanks for that info that it is possibly "off site" for the part-time program. This is the first I've heard that possibility. So, now I wonder if driving to this off-site location(s) will be do-able for me?!

I find it interesting that

a) part-time orientation is AFTER the full-time orientation.

b) figuring out the best way to do all the blood tests & immunizations at the best price is tricky. I'm guessing we need to have this all completed by orientation or we cannot register!? Makes sense to me. Best tips I saw on the full time thread is 1) one Dr. that was mentioned 2) Miami Health Dept 3) Do the tests directly with Econolab. But then you still have to have a Dr. sign some papers! So, I'm confused... do I send all the bloodwork results to the Dr so Dr. can sign-off? When driving by I saw a sign, "school physicals", but it was a chiropractor. I'd think a MD might be required?! I'm sure I will figure it all out, but anyone who wants to elaborate their ideas on the subject it is appreciated.

Are you taking classes this 2nd 6 weeks of summer?

I start microbiology lab.

Fem

Mocadell & Any Others Hoping to be in the 2nd batch of Acceptance:

I'm crossing my fingers for my peers. I know how hard we try to make sure we are ideal candidates. Of course, in hindsight, I wouldn't have been hesitant to do the LPN and LPN-RN route. I figured if I wasn't accepted this round, that was my next strategy, applying to both RN & LPN programs.

I'm thinking maybe as early as Monday 6/27 or no later than Monday 7/4. Initially I was told to be on the look-out for notification letters on or before 7/4. I wonder if MDC needs at least a few days from the time Friday 6/24 5pm hits (deadline for those already accepted for multiple programs to make a decision) until the time they determine the next round of acceptances?

Mocadell, are you taking any classes this 2nd 6 weeks?

And remember, we don't know how many of those wonderful TEAS scores were 1st attempts or 2nd attempts?! Though I have heard of some students doing worse their 2nd attempt, but I would think that is not the norm.

Fem

Faith,

You said, " i'd appreciate any details you find out about the program like its schedule or requirements, etc. Just so i could get an idea".

So far I can tell you that we have a checklist of stuff we have to do before orientation. Accept the spot by paying a $100 fee. Background Check $58, and then a slew of medical stuff titers, immunizations, TB skin test (must be 6 months recent), illegal drug tests, Dr. approval that you can do the work of a nurse, etc, CPR (BLS) card, attend 2 mandatory meetings (orientation + take another long exam)

The CPR card is good for 2 years, don't be afraid to sign up and get that done earlier if you don't like last-minute stress. If RN school takes you longer than 2 years, you will have to renew... but I think most RN's keep a current CPR card?

Ok, so that is a bit of info for you to consider.

Thank you very much Fem, and my goodness, they want a lot done before you actually start. Seems so stressful and you mentioned another long exam?! did they discuss what that exam entails? Well i really appreciate all your information.

Good luck!

Hi all,

I did my drug test at Econolobas for $40. You g give a urine sample at a near-by lab they choose for you.

I did my background check through the site MDC recommends and it was $58. I went to a place in the Gables to give my fingerprints. Be sure to bring not only the PDF they email you, but also your reciept of payment.

I did my TB tests and titers for Measels and Mumps with my regular doctor. He codes it under a 'well-woman's visit' and then all I have to pay is my co-pay. If any of you had had children, call your OB and see if they tested your immunity dfor any diseases. Mine had for Rubella, Chicken Pox, and HEP B, so I had them send me the labs to attach to my paperwork. This way you dont have to repeat tests.

I am taking my CPR class on July 9th at the MEdical Center Campus. You call the nuber they have on the admissions page to get the course code, then register for it liek you would any other class. It is 6 hours and cost $69.

NRSGRL:

Thanks for the info. Someone else did Econolabs, too. And I was seriously thinking about them do do my drug, too. Interesting to know it is urine. I wasn't sure if they tested blood or hair or urine? Not that it matters.

My background check is done, too.

IMMUNIZATIONS & TITERS:

What type of Dr. is your "regular Dr"? Is it a family physician? an internist? other? I was toying with a Dr who specializes in travel immunizations. But maybe he is too expensive?

Were you ever told to do your TB tests first before doing the MMR & Varicella titers? A student on the MDC Fall 2011 thread talked to a Dr. or lab and was told to do the TB test first for some reason. I figure either way, with the TB test... it is a two-trip Dr. visit, right?

Did you opt to do the Hepatitis vaccinations? I understand it is optional.

CPR CLASS:

In anticipation of being accepted, I already had completed my CPR class. Already have my card and had someone at MDC Nursing Dept look at it to be sure it was acceptable.

Gotta run to class

Fem

I already did Hep B before I started college back in 2001 and my OB tested my immunity for it last year, but I would get it if you don't have it. My DR does internal medicine. It's my primary car physician ( meaning call whoever you call when you get sick). The timing of the TB test has nothing to do with your titer. All all they do is draw your blood. TB tests will require 4 appts. 1 to recieve the test, and 1 to examine the results (you have to return 3 days after). And then you must repeat this.

Faith,

I think it is a 3+ hour exam? Not 100% sure. I THINK it wants to test our learning styles, so advisors can advise us (how to learn?) One of my classmates is a 1st year RN student at MDC, she said it is a whole different way of thinking. My understanding - unless someone tells me differently - there is nothing to "study" to prepare for this exam. You just go and take it.

If I had known all this to-do checklist, I would have tried to accomplish it earlier as to avoid stress. Then again, every college probably has different requirements to some degree.. but I think MMR titers are going to be pretty popular. And TB tests and hepatitis vaccinations (optional)... so if you wanted to start getting prices or something... and lining up an MD to do a physical and sign off that you are good with all this stuff. I think the only thing you MUST wait on is the TB because our papers say it must be within 6 months.

I admire many students who are managing 2 classes this 6 weeks and still making time to get this stuff done. So, it is do-able apparently.

Fem

NRSGRL,

Wow, THANKS. I didn't know it was 4 trips to the Dr. for the TB thing. So, I definitely need to go this Friday to start the TB tests.

Yeah it's a lot to get done, so a lot of props to you all who are juggling.

Thank you Fem for all your information, you've been sooo helpful :)

Faith,

My friend whose mom is an RN knew to do this stuff in advance.

Wish she had told me! LOL.

Anyway... let's try this link. Might help you know what to do for MDC.

If you do the stuff in advance, it is one less concern! *smile*

Thank you so much! I'm going to try and get started in case I get accepted this fall.

I hope your nursing studies go smoothly! :)
