IRSC RN program Fall 2012

U.S.A. Florida

Hey! I'm applying for the Indian River State college's RN program for fall 2012. Anyone else applying this semester?

Hey everyone! I got my letter today so check your mail boxes! I got in so I hope to see you all at the orientation!!! Good luck!!

Congratulations to all who got in!

As for shoes, they must be all leather with no really visible logos. New Balance white N on the shoes is OK, a logo in a color NOT OK. Crocs are not acceptible. You'll find out everything you need to know at the information sessions. I think the first is to pay for your background check and takes about an hour, the other information session later you'll learn more about the program, uniforms, etc. and it will be several hours long where they will try and answer any questions you have.

pc2801 Thanks for your response about the shoes. Do you mind telling me how your first sementer went/is going in the program? I know each experience is different, but I really want to do well. I really want to be completely prepared mentally for the next 2 years to come.

My first advice is really enjoy your summer. You will not have much time for anything other than going to class and studying once you start the program. I didn't work or go to school fall semester so when I started the program in January, it was very exhausting to me to have to get up early 3 or 4 days a week and then have to read so much. After about a month I got used to the schedule. It drops back some in the second half of the semester there are a few days we don't have class scheduled and now we are in our clinical rotations so the 2 days a week that I had to drive to campus I now am going to the clinical site which is much closer to home for me. The program is challenging, it is really important to stay on top of all the reading assignments and I can't emphasis how helpful it is to find a group of people to study with. Some good books are the Davis Success Series, I have Test Success and my friend has the Fundamentals Success which is more geared to the Fundamentals course. These books will help you understand how to read test questions and pick the right answer choice. All the instructors I've had are very supportive and I'm really glad I decided to go here for my RN.

Congrats guys!!! You have quite a ride ahead. I am currently in advanced, with one more class to go! Finally getting somewhere ;)

I have to say I have been really impressed with IRSC...instructors are amazing, warm, helpful even the ones you may be warned NOT to take lol

I have to agree with the enjoy your summer advice especially if you are high strung, high stress (like me!)

Thank both you and PC for the information!! I am excited and nervous all at the same time!! So is the program two full years? I've bought the Test Success book and will read it during the Summer. What has been your favorite semester so far? (Sorry for all of the questions, I'm anxious, can you tell!?) :)

Kinda 2 years. lol I started Jan last year, will finish in Oct if all goes well. We take summer 2 off.

I love the test book! Still use it although not as much as at first :)

I have to say this one, Advanced, has been my favorite. We did a rotation in the ER, which was the only place I could actually ever see myself being a nurse. That was the icing on the whole semester. I also really liked maternity, but only bc L&D was exciting. Postpartum was blah. Here's a colace, next, here's a colace, next.....lol

Ask anything you like :)

Thanks Nomijen! I think I am most nervous about the giving of meds and med calcs, but I know I am getting ahead of myself. You must be so excited and be counting down the days until October, Congratulations!! Thank you for answering all of my silly questions!!

If you can do basic math, which I am going to assume you can since you got in ;) you will be more than fine. Until advanced, there are just 2 *formulas* and by then you will be super comfortable going into critical care drips. I bought the Math for Meds, and manual of IV therapeutics and have never cracked either one open.

On a different subject, is anyone out there having any success finding information about scholarships? I applied for a bunch through STARS and I just found out about the Nursing Foundation. I can't get regular student loans because I have 135 credit hours and an AS in another field. Most of these are financial need based and I'm worried that they don't consider me "Poor" enough, LOL. I've heard that there are programs out there where you can get your nursing school covered if you sign on 2-3 yrs with a hospital...Does anyone know about this? Or how this work? Who to contact? I definitely am going to have to figure out the cost...

I know IRMC does that. You apply thru STARS. Not sure about the other local hospitals.

I have gotten scholarships thru stars, and almost everyone I know in the program has too :) I fill out a million each time...and then you wait forever, but its worth it!

There is something else called workforce solution and they give you like 10k (not sure exact amount but it was a lot) to complete the program but you have to qualify, and like me, it sounds like you do not.

Great! I'll check it out. Thanks for the info, Nomijen!
