Hello all,

I thought I would start a thread for those of us applying to HCC's Spring 2013 nursing program. I am a Veterinary Technician/stay at home mom. I'm gathering everything for my application and hoping to drop it off at HCC soon. The deadline isn't until 6/1 but they recommend turning it in at least 30 days in advance. I'm a current HCC student. I was planning on applying for Fall this year, but am now expecting a little girl to arrive in July so spring it is! My pre-req GPA is 3.86 (all A's and 1 B), I'm hoping that this is good enough to get me a spot in the program for DM evening classes. Good luck to all!

I was lucky with my vaccinations. The US Embassy in London needed them when I moved here, so I have a folder from the local health service in England with all my vaccines from childhood. Just needed MMR since they weren't giving it to kids when I was over there.

I just ordered my scrubs. Got a pair a Dickies Gen-Flex from Discount Uniform Mall in Tampa (very good store, but no cheaper than anywhere else). Then ordered a Grey's Anatomy pair online at Jensscrubs.com (far cheaper than anywhere else i've seen).

I want to get the Gen-Flex Cargo Youtility bottoms and a mock wrap top. I'll check out Discount Uniform Mall. Thanks!

Just wanted to add for those who need health insurance, Bluecross Blueshield offers a Hospital/Surgical plan for $49/mo. It covers emergency visits, surgical costs, other things as well with co-pay, and preventative care. It covered 100% of my physical, vaccines (flu as well), titer and TB test.

Was looking online at HCC bookstore and noticed that in addition to the book package offered there are additional required and optional books. I am a bit confused, I thought the book package was all we needed to purchase, yet there are additional "required books" and "optional books" listed. These additional books are not part of the package as the ISN numbers do not match up. I have learned from my past classes att HCC though it says "optional" you really should get them. If purchased it is an additional almost $400 on top of the book package. I had not planned for an additional expense this high and it is really off from the breakdown of expenses handed out at orientation. Anyone know if all this is needed. Thanks.

Past students have recommended asking the instructor the first week which books to buy besides the package. Dr. Vega told us that Mental Health can wait until later in the semester. Look for posts by RNinTraining (spelling?) in this thread because she gave awesome advice for what to buy and where to buy it.

Anyone thinking about working in a CNA, PCT, ET or Nurse Tech position after completing Fundamentals? I have found that FH, St. Joe's, TGH and All Children's Hosptial will hire you into these positions if you have completed the 1st semester of nursing school. They have "senior" Nurse Tech positions with a little more diversity for those in their final semester. I think it would definitely help to land a job once we are "new grads" if we have our feet already in the door so to speak.

Hey Guys! Hope you all enjoyed your holiday! I was wondering if anybody got the email with further information from hcc? Now there was a lot of info given and I thought she said she would get us the link to certified background. Can somebody refresh my memory?

Hi everyone.I am not a HCC student yet but I am planning to apply for RN.I would like to know if I can do the prerequisition classes online and if FAFSA pays for them.and one of my friend who works in a hospital as RN says that hospitals hire only nurses who graduated from 4 year colleges.Did anyone heard anything about it? Thank you in advance.

I highly suggest doing so. I had a phone interview and that's one of the main points the recruiter kept making, why hire me (a new ADN nurse) with prior CNA experience over someone with recent CNA experience? I think it will definitely help!

Some hospitals will only hire new BSN nurses that is true. Some do hire ADN nurses though . In the tough market, I can see why a BSN would help, I've been turned down many times because I only have my ADN. FAFSA is a form, but federal financial aid should pay for both prerequisites and nursing classes if you don't have a bachelors in another field.

Hi belle1005 thank you for answering my question.unfortunately I have a bachelors degree in education so that means I can not get any financial aid.so that means I cannot even start I have no money.problem solved!!!!:)))
