Hello all,

I thought I would start a thread for those of us applying to HCC's Spring 2013 nursing program. I am a Veterinary Technician/stay at home mom. I'm gathering everything for my application and hoping to drop it off at HCC soon. The deadline isn't until 6/1 but they recommend turning it in at least 30 days in advance. I'm a current HCC student. I was planning on applying for Fall this year, but am now expecting a little girl to arrive in July so spring it is! My pre-req GPA is 3.86 (all A's and 1 B), I'm hoping that this is good enough to get me a spot in the program for DM evening classes. Good luck to all!

Hi, i still didn't register for classes today. My webadvisor shows i have a financial aid restriction and i have to go to the admission/cashier office. When i went to talk to them today after trying to register in the computer lab they were closed. So now i have to wait till Monday to try and and clear up the problem. Did anyone else have my same problem? I really hope they give up my seat. It looks like its a mistake from Financial aid because i called fafsa and they said all my records for this year looks fine and i don't owe anything, they told me to go talk to our schools financial aid or cashier directly.

I hope you get registered soon too.. I was told that my seat is RESERVED and this restriction hold needs to be resolved soon and not wait til the last min to register. Emails have already been sent to the academic advisor for the nursing department and I will be following up on Monday. With my husband traveling after the holiday for work and I am handling the household solo, I have to have this marked off my to do list.

Congrats on your acceptance!!!

Does anyone know when do we get access code for certifiedbackground.com, so we can upload the required documents ?

Thank you !

I'm not sure, but I'd like to know soon so we can start uploading all these documents!

Thanks for the post it means alot to have someone from the last class coming on here. I'm like you, choosing to find a balance between the two. At orientation, they really have backed off the "scary" talk. They even brought a student counselor in to talk to us about stress and time management. At know point did anyone talk about having no life or anything like that. For the most part, I found the staff to be quite encouraging and optimistic. There was a lot of "when you guys graduate" not "IF you guys graduate". They even were telling us to speak up early and often about difficulties so they can get us help if need be.Nobody told us it was going to be easy, but it wasn't them trying to scare us. They stressed the importance of good professional practice during clinicals. I found the staff very helpful and dedicated to our success. That being said, it's up to us to seek out that help if we need it. But, besides registration, I had a mostly positive orientation.

I'm very glad to hear that. I must say, for the most part, the staff is VERY encouraging. But as you said, you must seek the help. They want you to pass, they want you to succeed in clinical, but they expect you to do the work and reach out to them early so you're not there the last week of class wondering why you didn't pass, etc.

Should any of you need anything, I'm reaching the end of the madness and don't mind answering questions. I'll check up on you guys periodically. :)

Did you not get a sheet at orientation with the code? This system is fairly new so I'm just going off of what they did for my class...they may be doing it differently this time.

No, Dr. Vega said she would try to get a print out to us. However, day 2 was a little chaotic and we never received one. I think she mentioned something being uploaded to blackboard, but it will be a while yet until the NP I course is made available to us on blackbaord (especially for those who are having trouble registering).

@sprmomof4 hope everything works out great for you! and hopefully by Monday these holds can be cleared out! do you have the email for the academic advisor for nursing? I want to try and email them too.

Hello Everyone- Just wanted to drop a note to say that I called the MedExpress near my home and they have a discount for HCC Nursing students for vaccinations.

They will complete the immunization side of the physical form for you as well.

Here are the prices they quoted me:

Varicella Titer- $60

Hep B- $48

Tdap Booster- $65

They are a walk-in so they don't take appointments. Anybody see any better prices anywhere? This was less than the Health Department's rates, so I'm planning to go here if I can't find another place cheaper. Without Insurance it's a lot!

The best price I found on titers was through mdlabtests.com. The Varicella after their 10% coupon (code is Fall) was $37. You have the blood drawn at a labcorp office, and they email the result to you.

If you have health insurance, the vaccines will likely be fully paid for under your preventive benefit. If not, the prices you gave are pretty good. Just keep in mind you need 3 hep b shots total.

I believe someone posted this before, but the county health departments seem to be the cheapest locally.

Here in Pasco the TB Test is $20, Dtap is $51, the Varicella Titer w/ lab fee is $38 and a physical is $75. I'm not sure of the other prices as these are all that I needed, but they seem to be very reasonable.

If you could somehow get in touch with your childhood pediatrician, they will be able to give you a print out of your vaccines you received as a child. I did this on a whim on Friday after orientation, and was lucky to find out I received the Hep B vaccines as a child. Granted, it was a little easier for me because I grew up here locally, and my pediatricians are still practicing, but even if you can get in touch with the school board that you grew up going to school in, they should be able to provide you with your immunization report. May be a way to save some people some money. Turns out I only need the TB test, Varicella titer and Dtap booster. Good luck everyone. I'm getting all of my stuff completed tomorrow! Hard to believe we are a little over a month and a half from getting this started!

I got my records from the school board. My pediatrician's office is no longer practicing so I could not go that route. I know I had a varicella vaccine, but it is not on the school board's records. So I will need the Titer as well. Pretty much exactly what you need, plus the flu vaccine.

I need to get on finding some scrubs too. If anyone is interested in a trip to Uniform City, Scrubs N Stuff or another store let me know. I want to be able to try them on versus ordering online.

I was lucky with my vaccinations. The US Embassy in London needed them when I moved here, so I have a folder from the local health service in England with all my vaccines from childhood. Just needed MMR since they weren't giving it to kids when I was over there.

I just ordered my scrubs. Got a pair a Dickies Gen-Flex from Discount Uniform Mall in Tampa (very good store, but no cheaper than anywhere else). Then ordered a Grey's Anatomy pair online at Jensscrubs.com (far cheaper than anywhere else i've seen).
