Hello all HCC Fall 2011 hopefuls! I have been following the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 threads and thought maybe it was time to start Fall 2011 now that the application process has started.

I just turned my application in this past week and received my confirmation notice in the mail. Anyone else out there that has turned in their application?

What are your plans over the next 8 months to prepare for the first semester (provided we get in)?

I have also applied for the fall of 2011. I received my confirmation as well. I'm a little scared since I have a C in sociology from 10 years ago. I heard sometimes the cutoff is as low as a 3.2 and other times it's a 3.4. I'm expecting the worst and hoping for the best. I'm going in with a 3.23 I believe because I got a 0.2 deduction for dropping college algebra twice. Otherwise, my GPA would be a 3.43. Would anyone mind sharing what GPA they are going in with?

Hello and welcome! When did you drop algebra? I had a very rocky start many years ago and dropped English twice but they didn't say anything about a deduction, in fact, she said since those classes were taken before 1997, they would not be counted.

If I have calculated correctly, I should be going in with a 3.71, but that is by my calculations and not taking any deductions into account that I may not be aware of.

I have read on this site that there have been some GPAs under 3.4 accepted. What I have seen is that the cut off is usually 3.4 but then there are lower GPAs accepted afterwards when people do not finish the sign up process due to getting accepted to another program.

Hello Everyone! I am so glad someone started a thread for all us Fall hopefuls. I am planning on turning my application in next week, my only problem is deciding if I am applying for days or night/weekends. I am going in with a 3.87 GPA and am so happy about it. I came back to college very scared I wouldn't do well, but surprised myself this time around!

I too was not the best of students early on and wondered if I would do well. Although I don't feel like my "memory" skills are as sharp, I think my "focus" skills are MUCH better! :D

I was uncertain which program to request too but ended up asking for evenings (b/c I will probably need evenings over days due to work). When I stopped by the nursing office and spoke with M, she said that they usually do not place people in days or evenings until you have been accepted. She said once you are accepted, you are asked to place your campus preference (which is also tied to evening or day program) in order of 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice. I believe applicants are then placed into their campus choice based on GPA but I don't know that for sure. Maybe some NP1 or NP2 students can fill us in more on this if there are any reading this????

Good luck all! I just graduated from HCC this semester. :anpom:I got in with a 3.23 so anything is possible!!! Also in regards to campus and days/evenings selection that was a part of the application to put where and when you wanted in your 1st, 2nd, 3rd order. I got the nights and weekends at DM which is what I applied for! Hope that helps.

We didn't have the option of 1st, 2nd or 3rd on our applications, we were only asked if we wanted day or evening. Maybe they have changed this part since you applied and are now asking for choices once accepted...I guess we'll see!

Ok, so my questions are around getting a job in this crazy economy. There are several threads on here where they make it sound pretty much impossible to land a job as a new grad so I'm interested in hearing your experience.

1) Were you an LPN before or had any health care experience at all?

2) Did you do any work in health care throughout the program (ie tech job after 1st or 2nd semester, etc.)?

3) Do you currently have a job lined up now or are you in the job seeking process?

4) Do you know anything about any of the local hospital internships for new grads (I think I've seen on here that they call them internships but I'm not sure)?

1.) I was a certified pharmacy tech at CVS for two years.

2.) I switched to a secretary/tech position in the middle of NP 1 and 2 at UCH

3.) I am going to be a GN in pediatrics at UCH, jobs are HARD to find and being already employed at the facility makes it a little easier but it is still ridiculous!

4.) UCH had a graduate nurse internship, St. Joes didn't even consider any of us because they just switched to all computer charting and having a budget issue with that, TGH has an acute care rotation. Brandon/HCA hospitals you have to have your RN before they will hire you, All children's in St. Pete has a new graduate internship that is very competative as well.

They probably have changed the application process by now, also you might have an easier time getting a job since you will be graduating in May- that is when they usually have more graduate nurse positions open since all of the schools around town are graduating at that time.

I have been debating if I should quit my current job (which pays very well but is not in health care) to get a part time tech job once I get through NP1 or NP2 so I can get some experience. I hate to give up my current salary before I have to since I know I'll be taking a pay cut in nursing but I think it will be necessary in order to land a job once I've graduated. Thanks for sharing.

I assume we'll learn a lot more about the available internships in our area once we are at that stage in the program? Or is that something we will have to research on our own?

You said you were accepted with a 3.23? That is like my GPA and you really are giving me some hope that even if I don't make it the first time around, that I could always try for another time. Did you get accepted during the fall term or spring bcuz I heard fall has more applicants and is more competitive. But, who knows? If it's meant to be, it will happen regardless of circumstances I guess. Any insight that you can share with us about your experience in this program such as what we can expect, prepare for, and challenges we will encounter. Also, how would you compare the workload and the learning to the nursing pre reqs. Are they similar in intensity? I'm so glad you decided to respond to this thread because you made my day and it's good to know that I have a chance...even if it's a small one, :)
