Florida nursing shortage? - page 3

This summer I am hoping to relocate to Florida. While on the Florida board of nursing site I noticed that a statement was issued about a nursing shortage in Florida. And they were Asking for... Read More

Nurseamanda I will def. check out the places that you mentioned. I did stop in several small towns that I liked in between tampa and Kissimmee. Still close enough to the ocean but far enough from the city.

I suppose it depends on what part of Florid you are looking. I live in the Orlando area and I promise you there are many jobs and little to no competition. LPNs occasionally work in the hospital here but most are grandfathered in. The retirement community here is HUGE and the need for LPNs in skilled nursing, homecare, and hospice is HUGE as well. No, you will not make $70,000 per year unless you work major overtime, however, the cost of living here is MUCH less than most states. I made $50,000 last year (overtime and bonus) and I live a very cushy lifestyle. Don't be fooled about some saying the benefits are awful. The last 2 jobs I've had maintained great benefits, although the more benefits they offer, the less they want to pay. Consider this: There are no state taxes in Florida. You can buy a large house (larger than you probably need) in a gated community for probably half or less than you would pay in Northern states. Oh yea, we have yards in Florida. Yards big enough that you can't hear/see your neighbors every move. If you have kids Florida has a lottery funded scholarship program with very little requirements and pays up to 75% of 4 years college tuition. You will NEVER have to shovel snow. Pools are open year around. Now that I've sold you, here are a few downsides: Yes, we have hurricanes. Sadly for our northern neighbors they have taken more hits than Florida for 2 years now. Our homes are built different here and we are prepared for quick recovery sans tornado destruction. We do not have basements. It is HOT. It is HUMID and HOT. Just embrace the heat and you will adjust. There re a lot of elderly drivers who are blind/ deaf or both. I carry extra auto insurance. So there you have it. Sorry this is one giant paragraph. I can't figure out how to start a new paragraph, the "enter" button doesn't seem to do it. Anyone care to edit this and school me on paragraphs?

Hmm I'm on over 3 1/2 acres in FL and I can still hear the neighbors LOL!!

Just FYI on this...2012 was the last year for Florida high school graduates to receive the Bright Futures scholarship. The Florida lotto is now among several states, and therefore, no free scholarship money for high school students.

I earned a 100% scholarship for 4 years (several years ago), and now my cousins who are graduating say they won't be eligible because the scholarship went kaputz last year.

This is wrong, there is still FBF being awarded. The only difference is that now the requirements are higher. You have to do 75 community service, 1020 sat and 23 act to qualify for medallion in 2013. In 2014 the act will be 26, sat will be 1170.

Do you have contact info for that? Because the high schools are saying they do not qualify because the scholarship isn't available any longer.

The lowest ACT score among my cousins is 28 and 1250 on SAT and they have over 200 hours of community service. (They went with me for at least 100 of those hours)

Would love to know why the high schools say the scholarship isn't available then!

That's what I thought! But they high school said no. They have 3.7 and 3.4 GPA...I'm wondering if that's why?

The 3.7 already graduated and is getting First Generation in College awards, and scholarships from the community college.

I will try to push the 3.4 GPA to demand more answers. Even a 75% scholarship would help. I can't understand why high schools are saying the Florida lotto left the state and they have lotto in several states instead of one so they money is gone. This is frustrating.

Thanks for the info!! I will pass this along and see if Jennifer can get the scholarship now that she's out of high school. She could use the money. She's applying to UCF's engineering program next year! Well this made my day!

Sorry to hijack the thread OP!

Florida is the worst state to work in for LPN's and RN's. Experienced, smart and well trained LPN's are treated like PCTs. They are not even allowed to check blood sugar at my hospital in Fort Lauderdale. I'm an RN, and we too are treated poorly. Exploited by being over worked and frequently under staffed because my hospital is too damn cheap to hire nurses. Believe me, it is not worth moving here for a job. Move here when you retire. I still see nurses who are in the late 50's working their asses off to save for retirement because the only make 35 dollars an hour with 20+ years of experience. I went per diem and make 38$, otherwise, they made it sound like paying me 25$ and hour was doing a favor for me. I have 4 years of training experience. Don't even get me started on the manners of the physicians. There are none.
