been out of school since 2008

U.S.A. Florida

I graduated from nursing school in 2008 and took my test and failed. Well, I finally got the nerves to take it in December 2010 and passed. Now I start a new journey of looking for a job. I have more blocks stacked up against me because I have been out of practice so long(if you know what I'm talking about). So a friend of mine talked to someone that works in a hospital and I now have an interview the first ever for me. All my other jobs were not like that important that I was to like nerves about the interview but this is like the real deal here for the real world for my career. So any advice or help will be appreciated .

Thanks

I am in the same position , I graduated 2007, license Aug 2007 , took a position with a medical supply company to get the bills paid and keep my family afloat since I graduated nursing school broke, and I had planned to re-enage in nursing 2 years later (since I had a contract in place). I would get offers weekly, until Jan 2009. All of a sudden nada, now I am considered stale, take a refresher, yada yada.Even magnet schools turn me down. Im thankful Im still in medical supply because the nursing window was as large as a hangar a few years ago to now being the size of a peep hole. Take the interview , its good to have connections.

Good luck with your interview. If this one falls through, Id suggest a refresher course since its been 2 years since school. Every little bit helps.

I am an RN in Jacksonville Fl, i received my degree in December 2007 and my licence April 2008 on the first try. I have not been able to find a job for 3 years, I did not think there were others going through the same problem that i am. Everyone i spoke to cannot believe that i am unable to gain employment as a nurse, they are usually shocked. I have been actively searching for 2 years with not even a call back, it is so disappointing and depressing. At this point i am not sure what i am doing wrong or how to proceed with my "nursing career". I think i may have to go back to school which is something that i am not looking foward to, it was difficult enough getting my degree. I would appreciate any advice or help from anyone out there in the nursing community. I am so happy to hear that you have an interview though, it gives me a little bit of hope. I hope you did get the job you were interviewing for.

Are you applying for everything, or just trying to get into a hospital? I got offered two PRN jobs for home health agencies, fresh out of school, had several interviews offered for nursing homes, and had two hospital interviews. I ended up at Specialty, worked there for a year and am now at Shands. You should look into WorkSource, they can help you with your interview and spruce up your resume.

I have applied at hospitals mostly. I called some of the home health agencies in the area and was told that i needed at least 6 months med-surg experience in a hospital to apply. I have contacted some nursing homes also and i was told the same thing which is why i really concentrated on getting a hospital position. I did try worksource and got help with my resume to no avail. The problem is i keep being told i need experience but no one is willing to hire me to get that experience and the more time that passes the harder it gets to obtain employment, it's very frustrating. I do appreciate your reply and the suggestion. I will try again with the nursing homes.

In same boat kind of. My skills are old and I am overwhelmed with learning all the new stuff ie: EMR, vents, etc. Been in home care and I'm sick of it. I kind of feel like my nursing days are over but what if my husband keeled over?? I"m up **** creek. I had 13 yrs. hospital experience back when LPN's were not allowed to do IV's etc. I"m terrified to screw up or not understand something and I'd rather carry around an old MAR then read it off a computer! I am so old school!~ What to do, what to do!!!
