Help!! New grad, can't find a job in Dade/Broward counties

<sigh>
Ok, I'm sure you've heard this plenty of times....but I can't obtain a job as a new graduate. I tested and passed my boards since July 29. I am so frustrated and disheartened by the experience. All I do is sit at home and apply and apply.

I've applied to every hospital in Miami-Dade: Jackson, Baptist, Mercy, Mount-Sinai, Westchester, UM, etc, in Broward: Memorial, Broward health, cleveland clinic, holy cross, etc.

I can't get a job. I even went to Mount-Sinai's open house for nurses and even got an interview, then was told they are not hiring anyone right now. What's a new RN to do?! Is anyone else having the same difficulty as I am?!

I went to school down there and am now living in Tampa. I have applied there and here and everywhere else in the state of FL and I've got nothing. I've had a few interviews that I had to compete with about 300 other people each position and still nothing. I don't even know what to do anymore. At least I know I am not the only one.

hi , im a nurse in tampa , i know that finding jobs is really tough right now , ive been an rn for 9 years , ive done some research confirming what you are seeing, here is what i found , to find jobs you must diversify your skills , show your possible employer you have an edge , take a telemetry course,its easy and you will have an edge, be flexible and adaptable , dont be afraid to work nights, weekends, holidays, prn, pick up as many certifcations as you can , network with as many people as you can, get on the computer look for hospital jobs in no where places like ruskin, odessa , citrus counties , you may have to drive a long ways but its work, my mom told me to look for a job like you have one , look for 8 hours a day, i hope that helps , please let me know if that helps , dont ever give up hope . if you do you lose.

I have heard this same story from states all over. I was fortunate and got a job but not sure for how long. The hospital frequently calls staff off work.

Nurse Re: Help!! New grad, can't find a job in Dade/Broward counties
I can certainly sympathize with you! I do not live in Florida, I live in Maine and my part of the state, jobs are scarse. The ones that are available, they all want experience. It's very frustrating to be a RN and not be able to find a job during a nursing shortage! I have been a RN since June 3 and have spent every single day since then looking, applying and going to a few interviews. I search for jobs as far as 100 miles away from my home, but am willing to travel just to work. I do have an interview next week at a nursing home. I was told by experienced nurses that they do not recommend new nurses work at nursing homes, but I need the work! But even working at a nursing home, will not likely give me the "experience" that hospital administration is looking for!
Good luck to you girls!!!

You guys are not alone. I passed the boards in Early august and applied to many hospitals in dade and broward.Still I havent received a call. I have walked into Human Resources and one answer that I am getting is "we are not hiring now or do you have experience?". Do not give up Nurses! They will need us sooner or later. We chose the right profession. Its just a matter of time. God bless :-)

Im at MDC right now for my RN degree and I soon as i finish I will be hitting up nursing unlimited. Go to their website. The offer PALS ACLS and a whole bunch of other certifications. Its going to cost u a nickel and a dime but its better than staying home just applying to jobs. Gets some certifications and u will get the jobs. Hell I think I might even go get my ACLS and PALS before I graduate. If you dont want to get those certifications fine. You will be competing with new grads such as myself that will have those certifications. Please by all means just keep doing what ur doing. It will make my chances of finding a job easier.
Insanity is making the same mistakes over and over again with out making a change. Do something different because what ever ur doing now is not enough or its just not working.
Complacency is the enemy of success.

You let me know how that works out for you when you graduate... I for one already knew to do this....it still doesn't help, it's all in who you know these days or a matter of moving out of FL. I could have easily landed a job in UMH but I did not want to stay in Miami for the life of me, oh well....
