Help low GPA

i messed up my first yr really bad but was able to bring up my gpa to a 3.0 before applying to nursing school. and i guess i am lucky to say i got into nova's program at ft. myers which i believe had lower standards because it is new. it is REALLY REALLY hard to get in with a low gpa, trust me i would know. but i went to a good school and applied elsewhere so that may have helped. nova is one of the few schools who does interviews which allows you to show what else you have going for you. good luck!

I too "majored in social life" when I started college, so I've been working my butt off to being up a crappy GPA. It's still under 3.0, but I got accepted on my first try. Granted I'm doing a transition program. Have you thought about going to LPN school first and transitioning? Transition programs aren't as competitive if you're not able to get your GPA up.

When I tell you I partied...I partied myself through four years and some. Sorority parties, fraternity parties, you threw it...I was there! I graduated with a whopping 2.9. I finally realized how hard it was to get into school when I was applying to graduate school (not a nursing program). Thankfully I got in a graduate program and graduated with an excellent GPA. Now that I've decided to go back to school again for nursing however, my graduate GPA was not considered so I was right back at my whopping 2.9.
Eventually I got into Broward College's program after being denied twice. I was able to sqeeze into the May 09 class as an alternate to the alternates lol and defered my seat to August. I would say try Broward College for the May class. It appears to be a little easier to get into with not so great GPAs.

Also do some self reflecting and make sure you're not the same student you were back then. My GPA certainly doesn't represent the person nor the student I am today!

If you did well in your nursing pre-reqs, find a school that looks at your pre-req GPA only. For instance, Broward College in S. FL only calculates the following courses into your admissions GPA: ENC 1101, CHM for health sciences, A&P I and II and the labs.

I know you asked for schools in Florida but there is a school in Oklahoma that accepts EVERYONE as long as they meet the requirements. Its called Oklahoma City University (http://www.okcu.edu). They have some type of agreement with the government to decrease the nursing shortage. They have BSN, ABSN, MSN, and doctoral programs. They only turn people away for the doctoral programs. Of course its pricier than community colleges but if youre really discouraged then you should give it a try. I looked at their ABSN program and its around $43,000. Im in the same boat youre in. I have a 3.37 and thats not good enough to get me into any schools in MI, so Ive been applying to schools in Ohio and Indiana instead. If I dont get accepted into any of those programs then Oklahoma will be my LAST resort. But when you want something bad enough you have to do whatever it takes to get it. If I do have to end up going there the only thing I wouldnt like is the lack of diversity I hear the state has especially since Im black and in MI we have people of all the colors of the rainbow here

It would be cheaper to go LPN-RN transition than to go to the college above.

Student loan debt will kill you in the long run.

You might want to see if there are any expansion programs out there that will get you in. I only have a 3.0 GPA and was declined enterance into a really competitive nursing program. They are turning people down with 3.8 GPAs and stuff! So, I heard about a program with a local chain of hospitals and they do not look at your GPA, ( you have to have a 2.75 to apply) the base it on how the interview process goes. The other good thing is they PAY for your tuition and books. They give yo a job while i schoo, a stipend every week and a 3 yr contract once you graduate. I just found out I got in today!!! I am so excited! Just do some research with the hospitals in your area hope this helps!
