I'm doing RN to BSN through St. Petersburg College. You have the option of taking it online or going to class. Given my night owl life I'm probably going online but might decide to do it live classroom instead, that's a year or so down the road. But I'm definately taking the coreqs online starting this fall. I've four co-reqs to take, one semester at a time first. I decided to go local because it's so much cheaper and it's an excellent school. I've taken classes there before and am in their system, so it was easy to apply. We have tuition reimburment, but it's only $2000 a year and I'd used that up too fast at Phoenix or other online programs.

Some of the classes require some on campus work like assessment. You take the class online, but at the end you bring someone in and do a head-to-toe assessment on them live in front of the instructor.

Good luck in your education!

St. Petersburg College is a local former two year community college that has recently expanded into the realm of 4-year degrees. Their are NLN approved and being a state resident very cheap compared to other Florida Universities. I could go to University of South Florida as well, which is in Tampa, but that's more money for the same education.

Good luck!

Darlene,
I'd like to pick your brain about Tampa General. I've had interviews at South Bay and Brandon, but my goal is an ER position at TGH. Any advice?

So far I love Florida, it's a whole lot like Arkansas but has sand. LOL. My husband, born and bread up state NYer absolutely loves it here and swears he'll never leave. I have a 10 year old stepdaughter and two wonderful pupperwuppers.
Hey,

So far, I really like it at Tampa General. Go to their web site www.tgh.org and you can apply on line. Marisol is the the HR person to contact, her # is 813-844-7331. Their benefits are very good too. Let me know if I can answer any questions for you. Good luck.

Default Vero Beach RN
I have been an RN for 22 years, currently retired due to a severe back injury. I worked in Vero Beach and organized the RN's with the Teamsters Union in 1998. We are on our 2nd contract. Because I can no longer work at the bedside lifting and leaning over patients, I am working for the Teamsters Union. Our hospital was only the 7th hospital in the state of Florida to go Union and the first to join the Teamsters. The second hospital is in New Port Richey. I spent the majority of my time working critical care, but have worked neuro-psych, medical-surgical, oncology and IV Services. I miss caring for patients and the nurses I work with, but now I spend my time helping nurses with their workplace issues and their contract grievances and issues. We will start negotiations in February again. Florida is a right-to work state which certainly puts RNs at risk if they do not have a union . Currently the new DOL rules on the FLSA and overtime may cause RN's to lose OT, if their hospital or LTC facility decides to follow the new rules. RN's are considered professional, thus they may be exempt from overtime. Hospitals and Facilities may offer comp time, however, I wonder how many RN's depend on the overtime to make ends meet? Would love to hear from other RN's in the state of Florida on this issue.

Hi Sue, welcome to allnurses.com.

I don't depend on overtime to make ends meet, but surely want to make time and a 1/2 when working it. Good luck! Keep up the good fight. As you know, not many of us in Florida are unionized at the moment.

Some of you already know me, I lived in Florida for a little over 20 years. An RN, I worked and lived in Sarasota. Went to nursing school at Manatee Community College and also University of South Florida at Sarasota. Great place .... love the beaches and the area is truly a wonderful place. I generally work surgical recovery and while in Florida, I worked in post open heart step down and also worked as a nurse manager.

I am a single dad raising three children (all are now teenagers - whew is this rough!). They are really great kids and I am a very luck father to have them.

Hi guys! My name is Tonya and I start the BSN program at UCF in January. For those who don't know, UCF is located in Orlando. I am twenty-one and currently reside in Titusville---about 30 mins from UCF. I can't wait to start! I am counting down the days! For now though, I will finish up my minor in Public Admin.
