Anyone applying to the Basic BSN Program at UM Fall 2009??

by carygt3

Hey everyone,

I will be applying to the school of Nursing at University of Miami for Fall 2009. I need to complete my current courses at FIU and about 3 courses in the summer to finish up the pre-reqs for UM. Just wondering if anyone else is applying/considering the Basic BSN program at UM? Did any of you attend the information session that was on Jan. 13th? Anyone spoken to Yenisey Cabrera (the nursing advisor)? Are there any current students from the Basic program? How is it?

Thanks in advance!
Cary

Yep, I applied... fingers crossed! Does anyone know the acceptance rate, GPA, etc for this program? I actually have a degree from UM already (in something different) so had to apply for re-admission and am unsure how admissions work for Nursing...

I have no idea! I am trying to find out the same thing. I tried to contact the nursing advisor, but no response. All i know is that I read somewhere that a 3.2-3.4 is good to stay competitive, but I do not know if that is in your sciences or overall? Most nursing programs like to look at your sciences, but i do not know about UM..good luck !!

I went to the little information session they had about a month ago,but they didn't really state the avg GPA. Yes, I am a transfer student, coming from FIU. Where will you be transferring from jmi0886? I believe the sciences and overall the specific pre-reqs for the nursing programs like, human growth, nutrition, anatomy, physiology, chm, biology, stats, etc is what they look at. You must have 60 transferable credits to get in, and those credits have to fall within the criteria( i.e. you have to have a certain amount of credits that fall under "people and society" and other credits that fall under "humanities". Oh and you also need an intensive writing course besides ENC 1101 and ENC 1102. Hopefully we all get in..but what worries me is the cost of tuition!!!!! 33k a year? ...scholarships come our way please.. Chichi9, I think you may have a good chance of getting in, if you're a previous UM student; will you be applying to the Basic or accelerated?

Keep me updated on your application statuses!!! Hope we all get in !

cary, I just graduated from BCC in December with my AA in pre-nursing. I am taking some classes now at FIU as well (b/c I am applying there also) although I really do not want to go to their program but I am applying anyways. Intensive writing??? I did not see that on the website! I guess I have to take that this summer!! nor have I taken biology yet! but everything else I have done...I also applied late, not early decision...t has always been my dream to go to UM although it is expensive I will be applying for tons of aid, like loans, scholarships etc!I will definitely be broke lol good luck! let me know what happens

Actually, the FIU program is fantastic, i hope to get in..it's just soo competitive-- they accept 50 students only, and everyone has a high gpa. intensive writing course like what we call at FIU a "gordon rule writing class", for instance my PHI2600 (intro to ethics) is a gordon rule class, so it falls in lieu of the writing class as well as it counts as an arts and humanities. What classes are you taking at FIU...intercultual communications and intro to nursing? I will be taking biology in the summer at miami dade, let me know if you'd like to take it together! Also, I could scan the transfer student worksheet from UM, and send via email if you'd like, to have an idea of what you have left.

Edit: I applied before March 1st...I don't think there is early decision for transfer students...only freshman have a choice of doing that i believe.

Yes I am taking intercultural communications online. That is actually my first online class and I really like it! I am taking into to nursing as well. The most boring class I have ever had. Yeah I would love to take Biology over the summer at Miami Dade. If you could send me that transfer sheet, that would be great! my email is: jingr003@fiu.edu Thanks so much!!!
Best regard!

I hope you get accepted! You should definitely apply for that full scholarship they offer at UM for the accelerated program.
