Same Day Surgery vs Long Term Care?

Nurses New Nurse

Hi,

I enrolled in a Nursing Refresher Course (4 years after graduating college and never working as a RN). I got offers to get my clinical practice (150 hours) in either SDS or LTC. Which one do you think is going to be more beneficial to me in terms of getting various nursing skills back?

Thanks

Definitely same day surgery.

Definitely same day surgery.

Can you elaborate a bit? Do you think SDS offer to practice/repeat more clinical skills? Or is it just a better learning environment?

In SDS you will be using a lot more technical skills than in LTC.

SDS you'll have dressing changes, IV's etc. The patients in LTC are mostly stable, while patients in SDS are getting anesthesia which automatically makes them less stable.

Ok, thanks, I will request the SDS placement. :)

I am orienting in a long term care facility that gets a lot of rehab patients that have left the hospital but not ready for home and I am finding out that I get to do a lot of skills for these residents. You might want to ask what the population is like.
