also, if there is a lawsuit, the hospital attorney is just that, the hospital's attorney. trust me, he will not hesitate to throw you under the bus, because you are not his client. your malpractice insurance will pay for (and in many cases provide) an attorney to you, because it is in their interest to defend you.
this is all old news to us old people, but new grads need to know this. nso is a good company; there are others. ask the agent whether it covers you for actions only while the policy is active (while you are still paying the premiums) or whether it covers actions occurring in the time period when premium was being paid, whether or not the policy is still in force. makes a difference.
and to give you another example, say you're working at x hospital, you've been there for awhile; then you decide to leave for whatever reason. you get hired at y hospital. 3 years later you're still working at y hospital, but now you get called into court because of something that happened while you were at x hospital. if you do not have your own malpractice insurance, you will not be covered under x hospital or their attorney, and companies will do anything for their benefit, including throwing you under the bus if it benefits them.
in short, yes, purchasing malpractice insurance is strongly recommended, including hospital nurses.

I personally would work for a few months before doing ACLS, it kind of helps to have a few skills in place and glance and try to read some of the EKGs on your patients charts and learn the rythms. A lot of jobs don't require ACLS. Mainly ER, ICU, Surg, Etc. Usually just general med floors don't require it but if they do, they will usually pay for you to take the course. I would ask the company you are working for (are about to work for soon). Oh and you won't remember everything from nursing school, no worries. You will be fine!when renewing for your CPR, go for the ACLS instead of BLS.

Doing so just puts a huge "PLEASE SUE ME" signs on your back.
- Jul 25, '11 by ExpatHopefulI was told by a legal team that came to lecture us in nursing school that if you are sued for malpractice and are only covered by the insurance provided by your employer that they cannot go after your own own assets ($, home, etc). On the other hand if you purchased personal malpractice insurance they can and will which can lead to personal bankruptcy and misery. It sort of seemed like you're screwed either way though, because if you don't have personal coverage then you have the problems outlined above.

Do this, even if you are young. Do it *because* you are young. Your retirement nest egg will be much bigger the younger you start, you may be able to withdraw with special tax treatment to buy a first home, and matching programs are essentially free money.
I think too many young people overlook how much they can save without missing it if they start out saving just a small percentage of their incomes (say, 5%) per month in a company-sponsored retirement plan.
This doesn't just apply to you--and it may not be as easy in this economy--but do consider the "fit" of the system for you with that first, second, third job. I hear on here about job-hopping, and what job-hoppers don't realize is that they could also lose out on free retirement money. Many systems require five years of continuous service before being vested in a pension plan, if one is offered. Job-hopping means that a nurse may *never* become vested.
I worked for a company for nine years before resigning. My pension benefit will be a little over $600 per month when I retire. My husband has worked for one for 20 years. His pension benefit will be nearly $3000 per month when he retires. You can have more than one pension, but you will never get one if you don't pay attention to the vesting requirements of your employer.
