Pinning HELP!!

Nurses New Nurse

Ok, my school does not have a pinning ceremony, which I think is terrible, but we cannot do anything about it now. I am one of the class officers and we decided to buy the pins and pin everyone right before we take our class photo on Wednesday. We have also put the Nightengale pledge on cards to hand out to everyone. Now, the pins we bought are the gold "RN" lapel pins. My question is, can we actually wear those just to take a picture since we are not technically RN's yet? We just kinda threw this together in the last 2 weeks and we don't want to do anything majorly wrong. Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

I think as long as you are not portraying yourselves as nurses before becoming licensed it should be OK.

Check with your state board if you're worried.

I think thats terrible also. Geez.

Hi - my school doesn't do a pinning ceremony either. We will be "pinned" at graduation as we walk across the stage - after we hand the director our pin that we all purchased with our own non-existent money. Okay - anyway, as for the picture. When we had our picture, the director brought 2 of the pins and she had us wear them for our individual picture. They say RN and you can see it in my picture. That was her suggestion.... Just a thought :)

We have planned our own pinning ceremony. We had a huge garage sale where our class donated items along with our instructors and other nursing students. We made $1500.00! It is standard procedure at our school for the seniors to put together their own ceremony. It is the evening before graduation. Ours is the 16th.

Do others plan their own ceremony or does the department do it all?

I don't see anything wrong with having an RN pin in your picture.

Congrats! :nurse:

Our school does a pinning ceremony and makes all the arrangements for the most part. Anything special, though, we had to plan ourselves. We did have to buy our own pins. We also put together a slide show of pictures we took over the course of nursing school and one student gave a speech. We could have had refreshments after the ceremony, but we would have had to pay for it ourselves. We made our own arrangements for having our pictures made too.

As for using the "RN" pins, I don't think anyone would have major issues with it. I guess technically you probably shouldn't use them, but as long as you're not misrepresenting yourself to a patient or someone else, it's not that big of a deal.

We had a pinning ceremony. We had to raise all the money for it and we did! Our pins say RN on them and it's the same pin that the school has been using for years. During the ceremony those of us who had passed NCLEX were announced as "RN's" but everyone had the same pin.

Don't all pinning pins have "RN" on them? they are nursing pins and all our options had RN on them. Does your school not allow you to plan a pinning? We do not automatically have one, the graduating class has to organize it and we only get a small amount of money. We get a lot of things donated and we all buy our own pins and pictures etc. I think you could probably fight to get a ceremony if you planned it all yourselves. But I think all RN pins for this type of thing would probably have RN on them.

Most pinning ceremonies involve the school's unique, traditional pin, and most traditional school pins do not say "RN" on them -- they have the name of the school on them.

To be persnickety about it, the pinning ceremony doesn't indicate that you are (or make you) an RN; it only indicates that you are a graduate of the school (after that, whether or not you become an RN is up to you :)) -- that's why the pins have the name of the school on them, but not the "RN" designation.

our school and many other schools around here have RN on them, along with a school logo. so, maybe it depends on the school and where you are. and obviously it does not make you an RN, anyone who is in nursing school knows that the RN results from passing the NCLEX. I don't think anyone is confused about that. The RN on the pin is just symbolic of the journey, not a title when you are done with school.

My pin has my school's emblem on it and we were given the option of adding RN or BSN attached to it by a tiny chain. We had to buy our own pins and they were 40 something dollars for the cheapest ones.

I agree, it does depend on the school, and there is lots of variation. I think the "RN" on the pin is a newer trend, though.
