It is definitely a culture that is established over generations....the only way to turn one for positive is a consisted strong leader and willing participants to change the culture....I am there....in the turning phase...most are on board...others are flying like Seagulls...behind the boat...

Always nice to hear a positive perspective! With anything, people tend to focus on the negative. I remember that when psychology started looking at what makes people happy vs. sick/upset, it was a big deal. So we have to make ourselves pull up now and then to notice the good out there!

Good idea!!!

Good things at work:

-There is always someone I can turn to with questions who will not belittle me or tell me I "should" know it (even if that is what they think.)

-There is always someone who will come and look at a patient with me if I think they need a second opinion.

-I have made at least one lasting friendship there.

-The nurses and aides and secretaries are almost ALL kind, caring, intelligent and patient advocates.

-I work with kids! :) :) :)

-Almost all our doctors are easy to talk to.

I am sure there are other things I can think of. But at the end of the day, with all the frustration I have with myself or other things, I KNOW it's overall a good place to work despite some shortcomings.

Well I've been an RN for 9 months now & I truly enjoy working on my med/surg/tele unit. Nearly every RN and LPN I work with are super great people who help each other out, the charge nurses are great too, the secretaries are very helpful, most of the PCAs are good, I've yet to have a "mean" doctor confrontation because nearly all of them have great attitudes and don't yell at me when I call them to say a pt's VS are not great or UO is too low or something. I truly enjoy my profession and feel satisfied even at the end of a long stressful evening at work. I could not imagine being in another field. :) Yes there are bad days, but there are so many more good ones I think.

I have been an RN for 9 months now and I feel that some days I have got the hang of it. Only a few times have I had such a frustrating, unproductive shift that I can't wait to leave. :banghead: Even on the bad days, I still like my job. :lol2: I've had wonderful role models, I've learned so much from the patients and the other staff members. I can count on one hand how many people have not treated me with respect. I am happy to see that some of the other new grads have been doing well. :yelclap: Best of luck to the other first year nurses.

Twinmommy+1, I was just looking through some of the recent threads, and thinking that we need a more positive feel around here...thank you for starting this thread before I could!

I've been an RN for 9 months, and I love my job. I work nights in the NICU...what's better than cuddling a feeder-grower in a rocker and getting paid for it? Everyone I work with is wonderful. The night crew is extremely supportive and helpful. If we get a new admission, there is always at least one extra person willing to help - take vitals, get the baby hooked up to the monitor, start an IV, draw lab, etc. We take breaks together and socialize, and some are friends outside of work as well. 2 other new grads started with me, and everyone has been so supportive of all of us. Now a new group of new grads has started night shift, and everyone is being just as friendly and supportive toward them as they were to me!

Thanks OP-we needed a good thread like this!!

I am in now for 10 months on Med/Surg, love my co-workers, have great docs to work with and have learned so much!! Even though it has it's moments of chaos and wondering what in the heck I have gotten myself into, the positive far outway those times. I have met so many wonderful people and been there for families in their hardest times and the only thing that I would even possibly change would be the fact that I didn't do it sooner. This is exactly where I am supposed to be. Good luck to all the others and thanks to the Allnurses family that have added a great deal to the support that I have received this first year.
