sweetmissdixie- where are you located if you don't mind me asking? I go to school in Houston and I wanted to apply for all of the versant programs in Texas I really want to get into the Versant program from what I hear it's really scary being thrown on the floor with very little orientation and training and it sounds like it would be a really great opportunity.

According to their website:

RN Residency

Evergreen does not currently have RN Residency positions available. All RN positions posted online require a minimum of one year RN experience. Please continue to check our website for updated information.

Hey all.

I'm trying to put together a list of hospitals that offer nurse residency programs for new graduates. Here is what I have so far, please add any hospitals that you know of..

Seton Hospital - Austin, TX

Georgetown University Medical Center- Washington DC

Washington Hospital Center- Washington DC

Johns Hopkins - Baltimore, MD

Vanderbilt University Medical Center- Nashville, TN

Evergreen Hospital- Seattle, WA

Surely there are more than this, but these are the only ones I could find. Where else offers a programs like these?

Texas Medical Center hospitals in Houston. Most of them have some kind of internship program. Memorial Hermann and St. Lukes also do programs in their community hospitals.

I am trying to have a more complete understanding of a residency program. I understand you get paid while in them, and I understand that most come with a required time you must work for the hospital after completing their program. What I don't understand is the negatives... Why aren't all new grads trying to get into these programs?

Seems to me a guaranteed job is exactly what most new grads need, right?

Do these not count as "experience" or something (towards a CCRN or the like)?

Please help me understand, thanks in advance.

Some people do not want to work in an ICU, some do not like contracts. IE my program charged you $16K (prorated) If you did not complete your contract. What if you had to move? Also, just because you have the contract does not mean you are guarenteed the job. If you perform poorly they may let you go. Another thought, you may get put in a unit you do not like. What are you going to do? Quit? Then you have to pay the ETF for your contract.

Most I've seen require a work commitment from you but reserve the right to terminate you at any time so its not a guaranteed job. There are also WAY more new grads than residency programs. And hospitals can still offer good new grad training without calling it a residency or having that structure.

I wanted to get in to a residency program but in the end I got one and only one job offer, which happened to be in the exact department I wanted to work in. The residency program I did manage to get an interview in was over two hours away, my husband didn't want to relocate, it wasn't in the nursing field I was most interested in, and didn't end up offering me a spot anyway. The place I am working at has just started a residency program but it sounds like the big change from its regular new grad training is that many of the classes I'd have taken anyway I'll take with the other new grads at the hospital, we'll be doing a group education project together, and will have a graduation ceremony. I'm excited about it but its definitely not as regimented as other residencies I've seen and there's no work commitment. But this all happened after I was hired so didn't know about it when I accepted the job.

Do you know when each of the 3 programs start? I know they are hiring now for the one starting in June, but I just barely missed the cuttoff (I graduate in early June) for that one. I'm wondering when to expect the next program for 2011.
