but the other day I worked with one of our new grads who is 2/3 into orientation. The primary preceptor hasn't taught correct charting!!!! Felt so bad about having to have the new grad keep making corrections. Also the new grad had never taken a TO themselves, the preceptor does. What is this preceptor doing to our new nurse? This preceptor rarely does proper charting per hospital policy to begin with, why are they giving a her a new grad to teach the wrong way of doing things? The new grad's critical thinking and organizational skills are below the other new grads in this group, so the preceptor can't be wonderful for that. Why can we not teach the right way to do things off the bat? Argh. Felt so mean & witchy when I had to tell the boss. But I want the new grad to be able to handle our floor after orientation.

I always cringe when our less than stellar nurses, imo of course, are asked to precept a new nurse. Its really nice that you are concerned about this new grad's orientation experience although I'm not sure any preceptor is to blame for someone's lack of critical thinking skills. As with anything I've seen some new grads that are incredible and some that I wonder how they ever got signed off on a bed bath. I hope it works out.

It's great that you care enough to try to correct what has been happening & put the orientee back on track.

My organization requires the hiring manager to meet with the orientee & preceptor on a regular basis - most depts do it every othe week. These short meetings include discussion of what has been accomplished & an examination of the ongoing documentation. There are specific milestones that need to be accomplished by certain times (may vary according to the individual's action plan) and it is up to the MANAGER to make sure that these are being done.

Hiring managers are accountable for the competency of the staff that they supervise. When you spoke up, you were not 'tattling'. The manager should thank you.

THANK YOU!!!! I just got my preceptor switched b/c I felt he was teaching me all the wrong ways of doing things, he would click procedures off on the computer that he NEVER did... just b/c he didn't feel like doing them.

I don't feel I should be learning these things in this manner, thank goodness I'm switching!
