Nclex ..advice for internationally trained RN?

If you are now in the USA you can go to a local nursing school and look in their library for textbooks. If you take the Kaplan course you will be told where a Kaplan "library" is located that will contain test books and videos. As a pedi nurse I can tell you that the most questions have to do with fluids as fluid overload is a HUGE problem. So know the difference between isotonic, hyper and hypotonic fluids. Also, growth and development questions like what toy to offer and how much info can you give a 12 yr old, etc. Good luck!!

Regarding nursing care plans and nursing diagnosis....I'm used to using integrated care pathways in the UK ..how do US nurses use care plans at ward/unit level ...are there pre printed care plans ... I would appreciate it if anyone could give me a description of how nursing careplans documentation etc is utilised on the floor.

In our facility they are pre-printed. Well, they are on computer, but that is the same thing. The nurse just checks off what is pertinent to the patient and types in anything not already discussed.

I did not address the mid-wife question: There will be some questions like where do you assess the fundus during the 4th stage of labor (after the birth). What is magnesium sulfate used for? Things on seizures and electolyte imbalances. The review books will give you an idea.

The above is very useful information. I am thinking of sitting the NCLEX end of Febuary between selling our house, relocating to Bay Area (yipee!) and starting new job (hopefully)-I should be able to get six weeks study done and maybe a Kaplan review course just to be sure. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.
