You are reading page 2 of My First Job as an RN!

Congrats. You're giving me hope as I begin an ASN (RN) nursing program. What part of the country do you live in, if you don't mind my asking? I live in the Northeast, and I'm panicked about getting a hospital job, or a job that can turn into a hospital job by graduation. Everything I've been reading says the chances are slim since I will not have a BSN yet (I plan on getting one once I get a job as an RN). Thanks for your inspiration and help. Best of luck with your new job!

Congratulations!! I'm telling you I loooovvvvee reading about new grads finding a job. It just warms my heart and gives me hope for when I graduate @(^_^)@

As advice(not an expert here since I'm just waiting for my nursing school acceptance email) I would say be a sponge and absorb as much info, tips from your coworkers.

Thank you sooo much!! You are definitely not the first person to tell me to be a SPONGE :) I can't wait to start. I start in 2 weeks!

Congrats... Can I ask what state you are located in? From what I am gathering is that in some locales new grads have no problem....in others it can be extremely competitive to impossible

I live in Tucson, Arizona :)

I live in Tucson, Arizona. There are 2 ADN programs here (mine and the community college), the University of Arizona, and also Grand Canyon University and Northern Arizona University (online schools that do clinicals for the residents here). Hospitals are VERY competitive and all I can say is put in applications EVERYWHERE! I got a call back the day after I got an offer from the hospital that I put in an application at and they said that they were hiring 2 new grads for a hospital but it was not listed as a new grad opening. It said the typical "needs 1 year experience". I was like WTH and did it anyway.

MY advice...PUT IN AS MANY APPLICATIONS ANYWHERE REGARDLESS of if it says the "needs 1 year of experience" stuff. You never know what may pop up :)

Congrats!! It gives me hope that I'll find a job after I graduate my nursing program (it's a 2 year program and it starts Jan '14). A lot of recent grads in my area (San Francisco) still can't find a job, maybe due to the fact that they don't have any experience :(

Don't give up hope! I put out a lot of applications, even ones that I was under-qualified for. You never know!! :)

Congrats! looks like you will have plenty of training...is your BSN program online or in class? just curious..lots of places I interviewed at ask if Im in school and if so they wont accommodate scheduling needs....Good Luck:)

The BSN program I am eventually going to enroll in is an online program. Most schools will not accommodate someones schedule. As much as I like an actual ground campus, I am doing online because it is much more convienent with me working. I plan on working my 3-12s and then getting a second job doing Per Diem work... :)

Give them a thank you note after an interview, it should bump you up on their list... just people in general. Congratulations and thanks for sharing. Makes me more hopeful.

Congrats :). I hope I am able to find a job after I graduate in 2016. Settling down and working in a hospital setting is also one of my biggest motivations

YOU GO BOOOY!!! Am so happy for you!!! I am in an ADN program and I graduate in May. I just accepted a job as a Student Nurse at my local county hospital. So it looks like things are picking up for us new (and not yet new) grads. But as the need increases due to the new healthcare laws, and as there are more of us newbies out there we have to be mindful that our rate in pay does not decrease. This line of work ain't for no punks! My point in saying that is don't be afraid to negotiate a higher rate. You probably will take the job they anyway...but at least ask. :sneaky:
