One of my classmates did just that and got it--she got hired in postpartum. It didn't happen right out of school...in fact, it took her a few months. But it's closer to what she really wants to do (L&D) than med-surg would be.
I also didn't go right into med-surg and I'm not regretting it a bit. Med-surg will always be there if/when I want to go back to it. Meanwhile, I'm learning just as much about time management, prioritization and developing my skills in psych nursing as I would have on any med-surg floor...ok, maybe the skill set is a bit different--no Foleys but many more IMs
IMO, go for it! If L&D is what you want to do, then start aiming for it now. Like the prior poster said, the job market is bad and you may not get it right away, but at least you will have tried and you can work med-surg while you work your way towards L&D.
Also, if you do get L&D right away, you could always pick up a med-surg PRN position later on if you feel like it.
