Harbor-UCLA (LA County) RN/Relief 2014

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hi, I'm new to AN! And I just wanted to start this thread about the Harbor-UCLA's (LA County) RN I/Relief Nurse position.

I was wondering if anyone here has started working at Harbor as an RN or has recently done their health clearance at the hospital. Would you kindly share some insight as when the orientation dates are? And what should we expect? Thank you!

Hi love1211you,

I was wondering if you can give me some insight on how the interview process is for ucla Harbor? I received a call yesterday for individual interviews for ucla harbor, lac-usc, and Juvenile Court. They did not specify what units will be hiring. What unit are u hired on?

Hi JLM817,

I applied online through LA County directly. After that, I received an email asking me to take their test. After I passed the test (all deductive reasoning), I was called from HR to an interview. I was scheduled for interviews at all 4 hospitals during the same day - back to back. I don't know if you received calls from different recruiters, but only one main person called me.

The interviews don't really go as scheduled (at least not for me and other interviewers). I went into a big room with about 12 recruiters, each interviewing an applicant. Each hospital recruiter take you when s/he is available and you're next in line - meaning, if you're scheduled for Harbor first, but someone is already interviewing at Harbor, you might interview at LAC-USC first. After your first interview, someone will let you know if you got offered a job at that specific hospital. You can either choose to take it, or continue with the interview. If you take the first offer, then you don't have to interview with the rest of the hospitals. Just sign the county paperwork, do the live scan, and you can leave afterwards. If you choose NOT to take your first offer, you interview with the second hospital. Then again, if you're offered a job, you can take it or continue with your third and fourth interview. After you go through all the interviews, you get to choose which offer you want to take. There's a risk when you decide to decline your first offers, because those who interview after you can take the position before you make a decision. So, if you really love your first offer, TAKE IT! Otherwise, take your chances!

Each hospital WILL NOT specify which units are hiring. Before your interview, you will be asked to fill out a preference sheet, which tells the recruiters which units fall under your interests. Then when you go through the interview, recruiters will try to offer you a position in an area you're interested in. But sometimes, your interested area might not hold any open positions or already filled with previous interviewers, recruiters would offer you something else (if they want to hire you).

I was offered 3 positions: 2 full time medsurg, and 1 relief ER. I chose ER in the end.

Hope this helps!

Hi fizah,

I'm not 100% sure if RN residency programs accept a gap, some do, but some might not. I went on LA County's website and searched for general jobs. I believe the position for RN I/Relief Nurse is continuous (always open). But I'm not sure how often they hire. You can make an account and apply for the position(s) you want to apply. If you meet all the requirements, then you will be asked to take a test. The test is all deductive reasoning questions. Most people find it hard, but I love this type of questions. LA County provides you a link where you can practice these questions, they are very helpful. The test also has a questionnaire about your personality. There's no need to study for this section, just answer based on yourself. If you pass the test, then you'll get an interview.
