Hey fellow first year or more..nurses

just curious......I just came off orientation.....I have 5/6 pts, 3-11:30pm shift.

To date 1 hour 15 mins so far(clocked out at 12:45 am), that was a 6 pt evening.:bugeyes:

That's not too bad at all. I work on a busy med surg unit and my latest was 8:20PM (7-7 day shift) with 6 patients. Our norm on days is 5/6.

I work in a sub-acute wing of a LTC... We've had pts 2 days post op amputation etc. Not a cake walk by any means, though some might think so because its LTC. I have 23 pts currently, pneumonias, amputees, etc and the longest I have stayed is till 3am. My shift is from 3-11:30pm. I would personally give my right arm for only 6pts. Not knocking you load cause I am sure it is much more acute care. But I hate staying that late. Its the charting that kills me at night. We are mainly medi-care and each pt has to be charted on each shift. Very tedious at times. Especially if we are just charting to cold sx. ugh....:banghead:

10 minutes is the longest for me. I work in a complex continuing care unit, 4/5 pts on days, 6/8 on evenings. We use Meditech charting and is ok now that I have had some practice.

I work on a general surgery unit. We have 5 patients on days and 6-7 pts at night. The latest I've worked over was 2 hrs 45 mins. I was supposed to work 1445-2315 but, I didn't leave until 0200. I was late trying to clean up several messes and resolve serious issues from a float pool nurse. Afterwards, I had to spend the last 45 minutes talking with the charge nurses and team leaders and then documenting creatively in a way not to point blame, but just write what I observed when I came on shift and the steps I took to try and resolve it.

Needless to say, that nurse is no longer allowed to float to our unit.

I don't worry about being late because I can put in for my time and get paid for it.Can anyone else do the same?

I work a 'train wreck' step down tele unit. I usually get out on time (work 3-11) but have stayed quite late during a code, if my patient is in respiratory distress, waiting to give report or tie up any loose ends I didn't get a chance to finish during my shift.

I work on a cardiac step down/interventional cardiac unit..7p-7a..the latest I have ever stayed was till 10:30 am..that was a LONG LONG night..15.5 hour shift...and I live 45 min away from the hospital I work in..my eyes were so blood shot and I thought I was going to crash my car on the way home..not fun

wow.. i never exspect to leave untill at least 1/2 an hour past my shift sometimes up to a couple hours. and thats pretty common place on my floor

I just finished my 8th week of orientation and had 3 patients the other day. Doesn't sound like much compared to some of the other posts. One of these was a very needy post-op. Had to work an extra hour and a half to finish charting. Didn't have usual preceptor that day and I missed 2 IV starts. I don't get paid for the extra time. Wish me luck!!! Going for 3 again on Sun. I am allowed up to 6 months of preceptorship, work on a very busy Medsurg floor with lots of very supportive nurses and management. I feel lucky so I don't mind having to stay late. Once I'm on my own though I will want to get paid for overtime. ;) Overtime has to be approved by house sup and manager, so lack of time management skills on my part probabley doesn't qualify!!!

2 hours late on a day that I had 2 discharges, 3 admissions, and 1 pt transferred to ICU after calling rapid response... Stayed late charting since I didn't have time to chart during my shift.... It was bad.. and I remember I missed american idol that night and I was sooo mad! We are usually assigned 5-7 pts... can't remember how many i had that shift...

I'm closing out my 5th week of orientation, 1st wk on NOCs & up to 8pts; I work on a med/surg unit. So far... knock on wood... I've managed to make it out on time.
