Hey fellow first year or more..nurses

just curious......I just came off orientation.....I have 5/6 pts, 3-11:30pm shift.

To date 1 hour 15 mins so far(clocked out at 12:45 am), that was a 6 pt evening.

I stay about 30 min over at least once per week. (do get paid for it).

Have had to maditory overtime many times....(4 hours over shift).

I feel pretty lucky in this regard. I work 7p-7a, and the longest has probably been about an hour, and that was when I had to try starting a new IV around 0530-0600. Couldn't get it and had to enlist several other nurses all trying to get it too, so then I was behind on finishing all my charting, restocking, hanging morning IV fluids, etc. To be honest even then I could have left earlier, I just hate leaving a mess behind for the next shift even if they don't return the same courtesy. Most days I'm out the door at 0715, 0730 at the latest. I've noticed that nurses are much better at showing up for report on time than on other floors where I did clinicals.

I work 07-19 (we get paid from 0645-1930 without complaints from mgmt), and I usually get out around 1930. I've stayed until 2010 a couple of times, either because relief was late or because a pt went bad right at shift change and I couldn't give report until they stabilized (I work critical care). I've never stayed late to chart - with only two pts, so far I've been able to get the vast majority of it done during shift (even if the whole narrative gets written out at 1720). If we do stay past 1930, we still get paid - we are not allowed to work off the clock. However, our charge nurse is supposed to "document" why we couldn't clock out on time, and we should have asked for help before 1900 if we knew we'd have problems getting out of there. This is a new policy - I guess some people do routinely stay an hour plus finishing up, and mgmt was getting sick of paying for it.

i work 7a-7p and the latest i stayed was new years day til 9pm.

hi, a hour and 20 min for me too. Once I got a new admit at 6:30am, I was really out of whack after that and it threw me off. I am 5 months in now and can deal with things a liitle better. I am on a med/surg unit. You know what I do now? My alarm on my phone goes off at 6:30 am( I work 7p-7a) and I know I have to wrap up any loose ends and get ready to go, it works for me!

When I worked LTC..I have stayed 2hr post shift b/c I had no relief. At the hospital I have stayed an hour over to tie up loose ends.

Yesterday was actually the longest I stayed after. We got a new admit at 1825 so I stayed after report to help the oncoming RN admit the kid (wasn't my admission).

I work on a busy CV stepdown unit, 5-6 pts on day shift 7a-7p. Doesn't sound like much, but it can get pretty crazy for a new nurse. I've been off orientation for about 3 weeks....and my 8-week orientation was cut down to 4 weeks thanks to "the budget". The latest I've stayed so far was 2100 thanks to an 1830 direct-admit. I made sure everything was taken care of with that pt, then had to finish charting on my other 5 pt's. The earliest clockout time has been 1930 on a 4-patient day.

I work 3-11 on a Sub-acute rehab wing in LTC--my team can max out at 8 patients (right now, I have 7). The latest I ever stayed was 1am, finishing a complex admission (that ended up getting sent back out to the hospital the next day after all that work :banghead:) I would say that leaving between 11:45 & 12 is typical for me by the time I finish report and finish my notes up.
