Called Out, Manager Never Gets the Memo.

Hello all!

I was wondering if this is normal. It seems that everytime I call out my manager never gets the memo and calls me at home asking where I am at?? We are allowed to call out up to 2 hours past beginning of our shift by I called at least 6 hours prior and talked to the Administrator on duty. Yet it seems they either have a hard time calling the unit and letting them know or the charge nurse doesn't write it down and forgets about it.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone else experiences this and what you would do about it??

I always notify my manager even if it means just leaving a voice mail. Some people call the unit as well but I do not do this.

If that happened to me more than once, I would be calling my manager myself, in addition to the administrative office. Better safe than sorry.

When my son is sick or I am sick. My son is one years old and honestly I am not going to neglect him for any job that I am working for. I always provided doctors notes as well.

No one indicated for you to neglect your son.

did I read your post correctly? You can call out 2 hours past your start time?

what does your co-worker do waiting to be relieved for those 2 hours?

That is a strange rule.....2 hours past start time. If I was the nurse waiting for 2 hours to leave and I had a sick kid at home I would be very unhappy.

It seems you have a casual attendance policy. Most places I have worked or managed would not have a call out time 2 hours past start time.....and have a limit on how many time you can call out sick with out disciplinary action. Doctors notes don't circumvent policy..... but that was not your question.

In the future, in addition to calling the supervisor or charge nurse, I would e-mail the manager or leave a voice mail on her phone to be sure she gets the message.

I can understand your reasoning, I can. I got the impression that a call out happens kind of frequently, that's why I asked. How long have you been there?

Yes we can call out up to 2 hours after, I never do it but that is our policy. Also we don't have a set policy on the number of sick calls either. Also if a nurse gets off at 8am or 8pm and their relief is not their, they just leave the pt info with the charge nurse and leave. I know its strange.
