I'm just beginning to look for my 1st job and I would love to know:

What would you recommend to a new LPN to make the transition from student to real world nurse easier?

Is there anything you wished you had reviewed, studied more or did before taking that first job?
I Know:
"Good Luck if I can even find a job."
I really appreciate any tips or advice.
Thanks so Much,

At a recent meeting at work..the boss mentioned that they were "toying" with the idea of putting some of us on 12 hour shifts. I myself would much rather work 12's because it would give me more time off. Basically I'd have to only work 3 days a week! The others however, are against it....the ones who work first shift. I work second. Several of us on 2nd and 3rd would be willing to do the 12's. The thing is....the ones on first who are against...are the ones who stay over til 5 and 6pm every day charting?!!!!!!!!! or piddling. Ive heard other nurses talk about how they love their 12 hr shifts. The boss said that even though they were just toying with the idea of it it would be a scheduling nightmare for her.....and Im not exactly following that. What shifts do you guys have where you work and how well does it work out?

Does anyone work in this area? I just started in an AL facility and am a new grad. I am learning alot- wish they had covered it in nursing school, cuz i think it is a great way to reinforce your knowledge. Just wondering what your thoughts, both good and bad, about this area of nursing-and how long have you been in AL nursing? Do you have another position at a different facility? I dont want to lose my skills- but i know i am gaining alot of knowledge- so theres a give and take. Considering another position along with this position just so i am working full time and a m using both my skills and my knowledge. Any who I appreciate all input! Thanks!

I am a new grad and I have been offered a part time position in a LTC facility but its only every other weekend, at least for now with a chance that I may get more hours at the end of orientation (but its not guaranteed)...my dilemma is.... although it will be great experience, the money is not what I was hoping for and I wonder if it will be too much, I would have about 19-20 residents. Is that too much for a new grad? Also what if something full time comes up in another facility during my training, what should I do? I need to let them know by tomorrow. I forgot to mention that this is a large, reputable company and a place I always wanted to work at. Any advice will be appreciated.

I'm working on a ceu about documentation legal aspects. It's terrifying! I've read about all the things nurses can get sued for ranging from falls med errors abuse and fraud. My question is this, when you find or commit a med error what exactly should you chart? Example: Jon smith is out of norvasc . You can't borrow from another and the emergency kit is out.you notify pharmacy and the earliest they can get it to you is tomorrow am his dose is due tonight at 8pm. Example 2:you think you gave a resident the wrong antibiotic dose but you can't remember for sure. What do you do . Once you fill out an error form who tells the responsible party? Ex 3:you have told the aide to be sure Jonson ppa is on as he is unaware of his unsteady gait and prone to falls the aide forgets and you are in the middle of a med pass when you get to Jon only to find him lying on the floor with an obvious fx hip and a head gash you assess him and send him to the er where he dies from complications 4 days later family sues.is the aide not held accountable for herself not following instructions given by the nurse or should the nurse have to take on full heat from this incident? Now I am paranoid about whether or not my charting is any good or. Good enough is a better word for it. My handwriting is bad, always has been and I'm always in a time crunch. I don't chart at the end of my shift, I make sticky notes and flag my mar as I go and then I chart starting at supppertime . Then if something comes up I chart it. I don't chart every pen med I give I document it on the mar unless it's a nitro or someone who never complains . Have any of you ever had to go to court before and if so why and what was the outcome for all involved?

I'm an LPN who graduated in 2007 from nursing school. I haven't worked much because of my kids (they're little & I'm a SAHM), and it doesn't look like I'm going to be able to work much until they're a little older. I'm trying to work on my RN degree part time though since I'm not able to work. I live in the state of Virginia and was wondering if I need to do anything with my license since I'm currently not working, and don't plan to for a few years... Do I keep my license active, or go on inactive status? I don't think I have to have continuing education classes in the state of VA. I've tried calling their state board in the past, and it's hard to get through to anyone to talk to...

I have recently began a new position as an LVN for a severely medical fragile young women who receives her nursing care through regional Center. She does her own hiring and receives a monthly check for the nursing hours from Regional Center Golden Gate in California. She then pays myself and 2 other LVN's that work for her. She acts as her own vender. The pay rate is $29 hour and she writes out the checks. Is anybody familiar with this system and tax rules. I plan to consult an accountant but wanted to ask here first.

Our boss just informed us full timers that we are getting more added to our list of chores. We are going to have to take over doing the mgmts quarterly assessments because they say they don't have time to do them. And we do??? Plus they want us to go through every chart and find who is due for yrly tb tests which has ways been done by mds nurses.I think it's a load of bull. They worry with this when they let cnas do whatever they want and let them run the show which not all the aides are bad but there are a handful who make us all look bad on a daily basis. Mgmt doesn't address the actual problem areas they skate around them which causes more frustrations among employees. Yet another joy of nursing.

My two yr old woke me up at 5am vomiting and coughing with a fever that has since gone up to nearly 104 . I took him to the Peds office like they told me to and sat for over 3 hrs and he still wasn't seen I suspect an ear infection or the flu. I have to go back in the am . I wanted him swabbed for flu. It is a 20 min test! The mom in me came out and then the nurse came thru I offered to swab him myself if they would just do the test but noooo I am so aggravated at this place! If they were too full to see him they shouldn't have told me to bring him in. I also wanted to flog one of the moms in there! She came in and said her kid wasn't sick and needed to be seen first to avoid her getting sick and in 10 mins she was seen. I'm going to take my son out of their office after this next visit and get him in with my doctors office. I'm rotating motrin Tylenol and pedialyte but to have a sick baby is so scary how do you experienced moms deal with this? I work with elderly so I'm not even close to being a pro with kids . Help !

:oHi, you great LPNs out there,

I have been an lpn for 13 years now, I am a successful lpn living in an rn world. I know you guys can appreciate this one. I have to share it with someone. I am a nurse manager and am responsible for many RNS . Recently in the past two years, another lpn and I have managed our floors, held people to task. And we were defiency free last year, and received no G tags this year. And according to our company we have done better than anybody in our company. WE are just little peons. Corporate came in and said we need to get our rns . But yet none of the other SNF's with rn unit managers has accomplished what we have. I think a good nurse is a nurse that does the following, care, think , react, and have good documentation. And always research , and ask if you dont know. I am going to school to get my RN . But I feel I will be the same nurse I have always been. I just can legally say someone is dead. :yeah: how nice. I get to do an rn pronoucement. I just think the good lpns . Cause we all know just cause your a nurse, doesnt really make you a nurse! To all you lpns out there , keep your chins up and held high ! love you all!!!!!!

Hi everyone,

I was hoping some of the more "seasoned" LPNs could give me some info on some of my questions before I set up an orientation with what I am hoping may be a very good job prospect.

This is basically my situation. At the present time I am not seeking to obtain a full-time job. While my children are both grown and gone, I have an 84-year-old old mother who resides with my husband and I. While in pretty decent health for a lady of that age she does require trips to various doctors. I really don't have anyone that I can depend on to make sure she gets where she needs to go other than myself and to be honest I want to spend time with her if at all possible in her "golden years" because it is important to me:) I also plan on starting classes for prerequisites in January so that I can eventually finish my RN. Hence the need for some flexibility in my work schedule. I figure working maybe three days a week would be plenty for now.

Here is what I would like info on. When you work PRN do you have the right to refuse a shift that you simply cannot work or are you obligated to work every time they call needing someone? I realize that it is probably different with each facility and I do plan on asking before I accept this offer, but what is the norm? I understand these positions do not have benefits and that is okay for now. I just want to make sure I don't bite off more than I can chew, as I did when I went to work "part-time" as a mail carrier (what a joke lol). That basically turned out that once I was trained on the different routes I was working SIX days a week with NO benefits and no right to refuse working without being written up over it. I eventually had to quit:( Is it like that working PRN with nursing or is this a more flexible way to both get some experience, make some money, and still be able to tend to the other obligations I have? I actually have two prospects, both with LTC facilities and I would like to get somewhere I can stay long enough to get some experience.

I would greatly appreciate any advice as I am going to have to decide something in the new few days.

Thanks to all and have a great day!!
