So I found out my packet was accepted in August/September for the Army Reserves Nurse Corps. I was happy and nervous at the time. My scroll had been delayed until the end of last week when it came back. During the last 2months I hadn't really thought much about it because, in the beginning I was emailing and trying to find out what the hold up was and I received answers like "we just have to wait and get the scroll back." My recruiter and I didn't talk much after the first few weeks of emailing him. When my recruiter called to tell me the scroll was back I was like "oh ok." He was happy and I was at a loss for words. I'm not sure if I still want to do this. Serving my country is a wonderful opportunity and the incentives are nice as well. I'm just not sure if it's for me. I'm really scared that when I get deployed (b/c normally every1 will deploy @ some time or another) I'll get hurt or come back with PTSD, etc. IDK if my mind is playing tricks on me or what. If anyone has any feedback about what I should do, or their experiences as a reserves nurse and/or deployment I would appreciate them. I'm soooooo nervous and scared. I just don't want to make the wrong the decision. Thanks!

Anyone else went up for the Nursing board and if so have you heard anything? I hope we all get accepted. I am excited and really want to go to OBLC in either the February or March class, if I am accepted, because I heard the summer's are brutal. I hope by the end of the day we will all have good news!!!

I am working on my BSN and would like to join the Air Force once I'm done. I had a total thyroidectomy and it is controlled with synthroid. I was told today by a recruiter that you can't be on any meds for an entire year before you join and that is just impossible for me. Do you know of anyone who has received a waiver for this and is this info exactly accurate? She did not seem to sure of herself on some of her answers. Thanks for any information you may have. I was very disappointed when she told me this.

My name is Shannon, and I am a student researcher (and civillian RN) looking to contact military nurses with experience in casualty care. My project is attempting to identify the kinds of patient care equipment that are utilized at different points in the care continuum. I would very much appreciate you taking the time to complete the following survey:

Hello,

This is my 1st post on allnurses :)

Anyway, someone told me their recruiter told them they will have to pay about $3000 for their Commissioned Officer Training (COT). She plans to join after passing her NCLEX. One of the lucrative reasons for joining the Air Force are the financial benefits. I can't afford that!

Is this true?

Hi All,

Hi All,

I am prior enlisted E5 with 4 years in the USN. Every time I turn around I remember one more thing about the military that I miss. I have since received my BA is Psychology from UNC Chapel Hill and I am currently working as a PT aide, CNA and HUC to get great experience with the Health occupations and then go the BSN to NP route. Needless to say, I LOVE IT. The health community is where I am supposed to be.

I had thought about waiting till I was accepted to Nursing school (Jan '11 start date) to apply for the Army's NCP or something similar but lately the calling has been growing stronger and stronger. Now that the Army is actively recruiting Officers, part of me feels that I should just go ahead and earn a commission and then try to go the IPAP (Army's PA School) route to PA or the FNEP (Funding for Officers after 1st tour to go to Nursing school) route to the BSN then on to FNP.

The only hurdle that I have is that I will have to get a medical waiver for High Freq hearing loss in my right ear. I feel that since the Army is needing officers, and every facet of me that I can control is in perfect shape, they might be a bit more lenient to pass that waiver. Especially since I was approved for the waiver in '99 when I enlisted in the Navy and it hasn't really changed at all.

I have heard that High freq hearing waivers are not a huge deal to the MSC either but I am worried that If I wait a year and the waiver gets denied I will miss both shots.

Opinions, Comments, Anecdotes welcome!

Hi, I have a question I would like to ask informally and I hope this is an appropriate forum.

I am a BSN prepared nurse who has spent 7 years on telemetry floors (including almost 4 years as a USPHS nurse, I am IRR now). I am interested in transitioning to critical care nursing. I have been looking for ICU orientation positions in the San Diego area and it occurred to me that Balboa naval hospital would be a good place to work as an officer.

How do you get a tour of the hospital?

Can new accessions get a guaranteed CC orientation slot? Anyone here know how that works?

Thanks for your help!

I am considering a couple different schools in my area right now and would like to become an Army Reserve or ARNG nurse when I finish and become a RN. From what I see on the official websites, a B.S.N, associate's degree in nursing or 3-year diploma are required.

One of the schools here offers a 2-year diploma in nursing, with courses continuing over the summer. Would this qualify or is a 3-year diploma needed? All the schools are accredited.
I know that I will be at a major army hospital for a year before being assigned but I am wondering more about a typical day in the life. Where will I live? How long is a shift? What is the uniform (THere are pictures online of nurses on the floor in ACUs but that doesn't seem very practical) What is the community like? Any information in general about army nursing is welcome as well.
Thank you
