Hello all!

Hello all!
I thought I would share my experience while starting into travel nursing, beginning shortly about myself. I am 29 y/o and have worked in a Level 1 Trauma ER for the last 7yrs- the last 3yrs as an RN. I love my job and my hospital is a great system to work for. THAT BEING SAID- I mostly feel that I have met my potential where I work and thus the reason why I am leaving. I have attempted employment with several per diem agencies in my area without success secondary to the economy.

I have been very fortunate to have traveled the world this year alone and have become used to meeting new people and look forward to meeting new people! I have been working with NurseFinders and have been impressed with their professionalism and their quickness to answer my questions. I have completed my application packet, passed my online tests, and completed my UDS. I have yet to decide where I will start my first assignment- but have an idea of where I want to go!

I will continue to share my journey in hopes this will help/ motivate/ answer questions that one might have. Also, please feel free to share your thoughts and advice to a new travel buddy! I am hoping that by writing this, I may be able to communicate with people in future locations and create a good networking system!

I am currently working on an adult general medicine floor. This is my first job, but I would love to be a travel nurse, and specifically work on a pediatric floor/hospital. Do hospitals ever accept travelers to pediatrics if they only have adult experience? Or should I first try and get a regular job on a peds floor for a while and then travel?

Help! I am getting ready to take a contract that starts Jan 5, 2010. At this time I am healthy but I have a feeling that I may need a TAHBSO. Right now i have short term disabilty with my job. Do travelers have this as an option. Do we have to buy it on our own. If we do that's cool but where do we go to get it. Any advice would be great. I sign the contract before my appt with my ob and I would rather stay were i am at if i can't get short term to cover 6 to 8 weeks with no work.

I'm still taking my prereqs, so i've got a long way to go. But one of the appeals of nursing has always been the travelling aspect. My question is, how exactly does it work? I've heard of complications where nurses relocate and have to reobtain licensure in their new states/countries. As a travel nurse, do you have to go through the process of applying for a license/taking the respective board tests/waiting for approval for every location that you work in? Do states have agreements where they honor each others licenses? How about other countries? How long are the typical assignments?

Ideally, I'd like to take on contracts that allow me to spend 6-12 months in a place and then move on to somewhere else. But I'm guessing the licensure process is long enough that that wouldn't be practical. Any experience/advice/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hey everyone!

So ive been a travel nurse for a year now and I love it and dont plan on giving it up anytime soon. Im traveling by myself and am seriously considering getting a dog. I just got out of a 6 year relationship and this is the first time ive really been by myself ever. (im 26). I have always had animals in my life, and since I started travel nursing I havent had any animals and I really miss them! I think a dog would help me feel a little less lonely and ive been wanting one for the past few years. Looking at labrador or golden retreivers. Im trying to decide if this is feasable or not as I know they are bigger dogs. Do any of you guys travel with larger dogs? Do you find your own housing or does your company find you housing that is pet friendly?

I am in the process of signing the contract for my next assignment, but I am having a few issues. ...

I am in the process of signing the contract for my next assignment, but I am having a few issues. Because Christmas and New Year's fall within the weeks of my contract I requested to know which one I would be required to work or take call. At first the agency told me it was too soon to have all that figured out, but once I got the contract and saw the contract mentions holiday work I asked for it be included into my contract. Then the agency said because I didn't discuss with the nurse manager during my interview what holiday I would be working they could not include it in my contract. So I told them I wasn't going to sign until it is figured out. I am just trying to make personal plans to be home for either Christmas or New Year's, plus I don't want it to not be discussed and then I have to work or take call for both, or don't get to go home. Well the agency has been calling the nurse manager since last Thursday and no response. So, today they gave me her telephone to call and see if I could get the information and still no response! I am starting to have bad feelings about the whole assignment! In my opinion there is nothing worse than a lack of communication. The other thing my contract fails to mention is mileage reimbursement, and the recruiter told me I would still get the reimbursement, but I am signing a short form contract because I am already traveling with the company so it does not need to be mentioned. Since I entered into a verbal contract at the time of the offer am I obligated to take the assignment regardless of the holiday work schedule or do I have the freedom to walk away until I actually sign the contract? Any thoughts? Thanks!

Florida Travel?

Have been considering travel nursing for years. I think this year may be the one. Am considering...

Have been considering travel nursing for years. I think this year may be the one. Am considering traveling to Florida. Am trying to do my homework so as to be as informed as possible, but the more I research, the more discouraging news I uncover.

Which agency? There is the top 10 list, yes, but it seems that for every good company, there are also bad reviews to be found - and vice versa. Not sure if this is the work of saboteurs from other companies, recruiters, or what but I have to tell you, it can really make a nurse re-think taking this big leap into unknown and uncertain territory. It's hard enough not knowing what you're getting yourself into, but not knowing who you can trust, who's for real, and who's a wolf in disguise is very frustrating.

I know I need to find a good agency and hopefully this agency offers positions in the field/area I am searching for. Also need to find a good recruiter. Well, still not quite sure how to go about that one. The person offering up the info may very well be a recruiter. Sigh. I'll keep researching but can't help feeling as though I'm just going to have to take a blind leap of faith and hope everything works out for the best.

Get everything in writing - got that one but sounds like even that's no guarantee.

Not sure what I'm asking for here, but if anyone's interested, I'm looking for a position/"good" agency/"good" recruiter/"good" hospital in southern Florida. My specialty (and the position I am seeking) is in the OR where I have worked for over 8 years. I am a 34 year old female. Florida is the only other state I have a license in currently and I am hoping to go for the winter.

I've also read how horrible the hospitals treat their nurses down in Florida (with 1 or 2 exceptions)... another discouraging discovery. Does anyone have a good Florida travel experience to share? I could really use one right about now.

Also, anyone know what is the current pay rate for Florida nurses? I'd like to not get taken advantage of.

Thank you in advance. :-)

Kat

Hello all. I am a new grad RN working in med-surg at Kaiser in Hawaii. I am also a military wife that will be changing duty station in Nov/Dec 2010. By then I will be working as a nurse for about a year 1/2. I am concern about finding a job right away so I am considering maybe travel nursing with assignment close to the base my husband will be station at. I know they said traveling is a bad idea in our economy right now, but I dont know what to do right now. Any one want to give me some advise and what is a good travel nurse company? I just dont know where and how to start. People are just saying to try to transfer to another Kaiser.
