I'll make this short and sweet. I am a 31 year old woman in college for the first time. I am pre-nursing and doing well but I'm afraid that I won't be employable because I have a full sleeve on my arm as well as a few other small but visible tattoos. I have seen many nurses wear long sleeves under thier scrubs but I'm sure there will be many times when the sleeves must be rolled up and my artwork will be revealed. I hate that my past poor decisions may have such an impact on my future but nursing is what I really want to do. Any advice? I don't want to waste my time and money in nursing school if I won't be able to find a job when I graduate.

If you use digital references such as unbound or skyscape....
Does your school have any issue with this?
I would like to save some money by purchasing one of these programs for my older ipod touch (no camera for hippa issues and the like) Rather than lugging hard copies around.
I just worry that if I whip out my ipod that my professors may have an issue with it, or think I am up to no good.
For those who have used digital rather than hard bound references, such as tabers or the davis drug guide....
Any issues?

I got my acceptance letter today and I could not be more excited! I have to make it through the next 3 months, and I am grateful to have one class to complete over the summer to keep me occupied (A&P2).
I am also very grateful to have allnurses to come to for support, advice and to blow off steam! I encourage all of us who are starting school Fall 2012 to support each other as we begin this fantastic journey!

PS: I got accepted into a highly competitive ADN program.

I am a second year nursing student. Since I have two months off in the summer, I would like to apply for a job at a hospital, clinic, or any medical facility that can help me gain experience as well as earn me a few extra bucks. Does anyone know if as a nursing student you can work part time or full time at a medical job? And how to apply?

Hi there, new here.

I am having a dilemma on which route to take on going to school. I am currently enrolled in pre-req classes at a community college. Beginning 2013 I intend on applying to the CC's ADN program. I want to feel like I have a good chance of getting in, but really, who knows? However I am really leaning towards going to Lenoir-Rhyne university and getting my BSN. I have been weighing the pros and cons of both - price is a big one. I am going to go the route of applying for both and seeing which program I am accepted into, but what if I am accepted into both?

Do you think it is more beneficial to go ahead with the BSN? I am 23 years old, so I would like to set myself up with room to advance in my career. I already have an associate degree in a field I thought I wanted to major in, but getting a full time job in it completely turned me off, which is why I am now going for Nursing.

What do you think, go ahead with the BSN? Even if I am accepted into the CC's program?

Might mention I am fully commited to this, but I am going to have to work as full time as it gets to get me through school.

I had to be very careful because I am have been known to get a little "addicted" to online forums! Thanks to everyone whose posts brought a smile or a tear. Thanks to all of the knowledge that was available when I needed it most!

I will be in a manner saying good bye to the student forums and hello to the others (NCLEX) because I graduated last week! Thank God it is done. I am ready to move on to the next chapter. Good luck to the rest of you, you can do it. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other!

What's Your Attendance Policy?

Hi fellow nursing students!

I am on a committee at school right now in which we have been asked...

Hi fellow nursing students!

I am on a committee at school right now in which we have been asked by the program director to come up with a new attendance policy.

The current problem is that the attendance policy merely states that unexcused absences are seen as unprofessional and that is is our responsibility to get the material. We have a recording system called tegrity that is not always the most reliable, but in most cases is available for those who miss lecture or want to re listen to it. Some people are abusing the power and not coming to class because they can listen to the recording.

The other problem we have is that students are calling in sick before test and are being allowed to take it days later. This makes it so they have an unfair advantage and are also able to talk to friends or fellow classmates about material covered on the test. In the current policy there is no consequence for missing a scheduled test. If you do not show up or make arrangements there is a 15% consequence.

There are no problems with our clinical policy.

The committee and I are looking to see what other programs attendance policies are in order to see if what we have come up with is fair. Please tell us what your programs attendance and missed assignment policies are. Thank you!

So I did it, after getting letter after letter, semester after semester, stating that I didn't get in I finally got called and offered a spot in the summer program. There are only 16 in our class because it's summer and the first semester is 7 weeks so we're jumping right in!!! My first exam is MONDAY! I had class yesterday from 8am-8pm with a 1 1/2 hour break but it went by pretty quick, we covered a lot of stuff. I'm excited and READY!!! We have so much cool equipment in the lab...med-dispenser, carts with laptops, medical record program, simulation rooms with mannequins that have vitals, heart/lung sounds, and you can run IV's through...cool stuff. I start hospital clinical's next week...I've been waiting for this for what seems like forever, watched everyone else get in time after time, and cries all day each time I got another denial letter...but I'm READY!!!

Hi -- after my informational meeting at the meet-n-greet, we were told by two different staff...

Hi -- after my informational meeting at the meet-n-greet, we were told by two different staff members, or rather they casually 'suggested' -- take the NLN-PAX early in your pre reqs in case you need to retest etc.

I am really wondering if many take it while doing pre reqs?? Will the school be able to 'see' you took it twice? (*I'd guess yes...if so, how much does that negatively impact your app?) The school I'm most interested in uses a point system, and usually has a small waiting list. Most seem to get into it within a twice applied/two year time frame. Most convenient for me would be to get accepted in the division of the ns program which is provided in our town. Unfortunately - they only offer it here in even years; but at another location every year. THAT one will require an approximate 100-mile commute round trip. I know many others drive farther than that. I will if I have to; but I can have my druthers :spin:!

My initial plan would have been to get most of my pre reqs out of the way (I only need appx a year/or two semesters to do so) and plan to study my booty off and take the NLN-PAX late that last spring semester in order to apply for the upcoming fall NS cohort. I hate the idea of studying for the NLN-PAX while simultaneously putting max attention into keeping my pre req gpa at the highest possible.

Gah. Already I'm not attuned to the multitasking aura of nursing...Humm :banghead:

Tbh - I've always been quite good at multitasking, time management etc .. or that is what others (employers, co-workers, friends etc) have often told me. (In actuality I feel happiest though when I have the luxury of specialization, time to hyperfocus on a selected area or subject. Ah. That is for another post though!)

Would love to hear info from others about the timing of taking their NLN-PAX or TEAS V or HESI or whichever one they need to. Thanks so much!

I finally registered and I'm glad I did. I feel more motivated to study much harder :) It's been a month and a half since I graduated and will take my PN NCLEX in 3 weeks. I'm so nervous bc I felt like I didn't retain any knowledge in school. It was kept in my short term memory for a test and forgot the next day. Our school has been using Kaplan and have barely passed the quarterly test. I did the online review sessions and they worked great. I've been on the website practicing questions but get discouraged easily. My weakness is physiological content and confidence. (My confidence is everything and right now I'm trying to be positive and build it up everyday but one wrong question gets me down and gets me doubt, which I shouldn't). I feel like time is running out. Can I do it? How else can I get confident and ace this content?

Thanks :)

I feel like I'm kind of going out on a limb on this one but I thought I would at least ask and see what you guys think...

You have a patient with CHF who admits to drinking 10-15 beers / day and completely refuses to decrease their intake or change their diet. They state "I have made it this far, why should I stop now". Is it inappropriate to discuss another type of alcohol in place of beer. i.e. have 10 shots of vodka vs. drinking 10 beers? I know in the overall picture neither is good for this patient, especially when discussing alcohol intake and CHF, but at least by drinking liquor it would significantly reduce their fluid intake especially if the patient also refuses to change their already high Na+ diet... Just trying to think outside the box a little bit :-/ With the patient refusing to stop drinking, I was thinking the would possibly be the only positive in an otherwise negative situation.

1 beer = 12oz = 360ml * 10 = 3,600 ml / day of beer
1 shot = 1oz = 30ml *10 = 300 ml / day

So this alone would reduce the patient intake 3300ml/day.

Am I crazy for thinking this?? Thanks for your input.

This is my very first post. I'm starting with nursing school this coming fall and I'm kind of nervous but excited at the same time. I have been working as a nursing assistant at a hospital since October last year and my coworkers (nurses) kept on telling me that I'm going to be way ahead (knowledge-wise) than my classmates. I still can't stop being nervous though because I don't know what to expect in nursing school. Any advice???

Help,

I have two profs in this particular class/lecture. Good and Bad. At the beginning of the semester both wrote me up because I "didn't care about skills lab, and was unorganized". Bad went on to point out I needed to "put a cap on my personality". To which Good disagreed and actually commened me at the end of the semester on my professionalism and ability to communicate w/ staff and patients.

Prof Bad, flunks one person every skills lab. no one wants to test w/her. I had to retake a test. and she failed me for the second time (ironically she and Good got into an argument in front of me post test because what Bad asked me and I failed I wasn't supposed to know in the first place_...but I digress

So, when writing me up, Bad asked me, "So what are you taking to treat your ADD?" I was SHOCKED. I admit I am anxious during testing HELLLOOO isn't everyone? But the ADD comment was out of line. In addition to the "put a cap on it" of previous weeks.

Any advise what to do next?? If I ever have her again I KNOW I'm going to fail regardless.

And there's no one I can talk to. When I was written up, my Dean informed me that "all the staff talks" so no matter what I say its' a professor's word against mine.
