Nurse Caused Student Injury?

I have seen students come in the clinic and fabricate lies about injuries many times. But have you...

I have seen students come in the clinic and fabricate lies about injuries many times. But have you ever had a student say you caused an injury and the parent side with them? I just ended Scoliosis screening for 9th graders at my school. I and my nurse aid will usually check each other's student when we see a problem and mark them down for a referral. This one student was checked by me but the aide had left to give first aide in special ed. for about 15-20 min. The student was asked to wait for 5 min. if possible to let the aide recheck. The student sat in a nearby office chair and said she was done with her work and started to chat. She said her mom was a Pediatrician. I said oh I can let her check you. She said but she usu. still sends me to another pedi doctor. After 5-6 min. I told the student that the aide must be tied up and that I would just mail a referral. The next day her mom called and said who ever checked her daughter hurt her back. She said her daughter said the person tried to straighten her back up and she immediately heard a pop. And when she got home she had to take ibuprofen. I asked her the student's name and then said I had examined her and that didn't happen. And that the student hadn't said her back had popped. I told her I would call the student down and call her back. The student came in the clinic with no eye contact and referred to me as "she". She stood there with her legs crossed playing with her ID badge on her neck. She said she told me she heard her back pop. I told her she could go back to class. That was last week Friday. Today, Tuesday one of the head nurses called me and said the mom had taken the student to the ER over the weekend. Lots of test ran and nothing found but student has severe back muscle spasms and is on bedrest for a week with muscle relaxers. She called the head nurse to find out what was done during screening and to prevent another student from going through this. I was shocked. The head nurse told me to call the mother and tell her that the student sat and swirled in the chair and never mentioned a pop the whole time. The mother said she isn't a pediatrian and said she thought I was making everything up about being a pediatrician, daughter in the chair, et. She was very putting down and said it would be my word against her daughter's. I found it useless to talk further with her but said I had mailed a referral for slight curvature in spine noticed at the top of her spine. I asked if the doctor had detected scoliosis. She said she doesn't know yet. I called the head nurse back and told her how she talked to me. I thought the student was fine and was in class Monday and today. So the head nurse told the aide to check on the student's character with teachers tomorrow. Is there any kind of protection for a student lying on the nurse? I can't think of anything I would do different. I told the student, mother and head nurse that we don't usually touch the students but maybe to point to a higher hip or higher shoulder but never to straighten them up. Have you ever heard of anything like this?:angryfire

I have a parent who is asking for a personal aide for her 17 year old daughter while on the school bus. The student has Partial complex seizures. She does not have any medication to give to her when she has an episode. Does anyone have experience with a student that required an aide for seizures? What were the circumstances? I do not see the need at this point. Thanks!

My Principal asked me to verify this note. It really made me laugh.....

Dear Ms. "Smith"

"Johnny" has been excused from school from 11/09 til 12/09. They found influenza A which is H1N1 :spin: . He's out so long because the timeframe he is contagious even after the H1N1 has left is two weeks :icon_roll.......As far as "Johnny" goes he could use all the love and support he can get, cards, drawings, flowers, coloring books, stuff to do in bed he really doesn't leave his bed much. His fever goes from good days of 102.3 :chuckle to bad days of 106 .
Send home only the most important homework and we'll try on good days. 102 or lower fever :rotfl:!!!

Mom has also called saying little "Johnny" has had fevers of 109 :lol2::lol2: Of course when I talked to the ED Dr. who saw little "Johnny" he had to look through his notes to remember him (Guess there's tons of kids with 109 fevers rolling through) and he did write a note excusing "Johnny" from 11/9-12 but someone (Gee who could that be) added a "/9" to extend little "Johnny's" sick leave. Of course calls home go unanswered. Must be too difficult to get away from bedside what with "Johnny's" 109 delerium fevers. Too much!!!!!!

I have always wanted to become an elementary school teacher but somehow I ended up in nursing. My goal is to teach nursing, but I would also like to do school nursing in an elementary setting. As of right now I work in a MICU/Neuro ICU, and I am studying for my CCRN. I have my BSN and will be a nurse for 2 years this May of 2010. I know school nurses prefer you to have pediatric experience but can I still get hired with my ICU experience. I would not apply until the summer of 2010, but in the mean time I am thinking of applying to sub as a school nurse at a private school preK-12th. With the ICU experience, CCRN, and subbing experience do you think that is adequate experience for being hired to do school nursing? Also what is the salary. As of right now I get paid $20.91 an hour, which does not come out to diddly squat especially since our hospital took our ICU $2.50/hr specialty pay as well... GGRRR!:angryfire I know school nursing does not pay the greatest but if they could keep it in that area I would be ok with it b/c I would be doing something I :heartbeat! So any advice and input would be great!!!

Hello, y'all - I'm use to being on the correctional nursing thread and have now found that I will also be utlizing this thread as well. I have been interviewed and fingerprinted today and if all goes well with the fingerprinting I will be substituting as a nurse within my school district. I wanted to jump in here and say "HELLO" to all of my fellow nurses and let you know that I will be asking ya'll alot of questions. Wanted to warn you all ahead of time....LOL:D

My first question that I have is - "Are there any CEU's or certifications that only specify for school nurses." Can you let me know where I can find them. I would really like to get "a leg" up on current information. I know that it is a BIG change coming from corrections. I'm excited to start in this field and excited to meet and talk to all of you.

Thank you for any advice given in advance

Hi All!

I am hoping ya'll can help. What would cause a urine/urine-like odor in a child? I have a 1st grade teacher that sent a kiddo to see me because "she smells like urine". I don't smell anything, but that doesn't mean it isn't there. The child states that she doesn't wet the bed and neither does her sister (they share a bed). She also says that she doesn't have any pain or trouble with urination and that she only takes showers and not baths. I'm really at a loss here and appreciate any input.
Thanks!

Okay, here is my problem: Kindergartener on ADHD med and Psychotropic med each day here at school. We have been in school 2 months now and the teacher will still not send them to me on time. I have asked repetedly that she send him promptly each day at 12 noon. She will not. I spend so much time tracking the kid down and calling for them to come get the meds. I have explained to the teacher that is is of most importance that they get the med on time each day. She says she just forgets. I have given her bright colored post it notes with the time on it and still no results.

Funny how they seem to remember lunchtime, recess time, art, music, computer, but can't remember to send the kid at the right time.
I have called the Mother and asked her to send a note to the teacher about this and she did, but nothing has changed.

So my friends, what else am I to do. Teacher just doesn't get it. She said it is the students responsibility to remember....(HELLO.....THEY ARE 5 YRS OLD !!) :crying2:

Any help or advice is very welcomed ! Thanks Friends !
