Hi all,

Really just found this career tonight as I was searching through the allnurses site. While I'd heard of a "legal nurse", I was never sure about the details of the job.

You guys sound so nice and helpful here that I can't help posting!

My story:

I'm a SICU RN in a large prestigious hospital. I've been here for 2 years, starting for a new grad nurse residency program (happy to spend 3+ if it helps me for LNC), and my original plan pre-Nursing school had been to become a CRNA. Unfortunely because of health reasons, that looks like it may no longer be a possiblity. While I like being a staff nurse, I do not want to stay in the high-stress, fast-paced ICU area forever (though I'm sure LNCs also live in a high stressed/fast paced world at times as well).

Though I haven't read much about it (only on this forum for a couple of hours), legal nursing sounds quite interesting. I don't know much at all about law and the legal environment. I think I'd enjoy working at home or working at an office and being social. Though I'm organized, a great writer, and can speak well, I'm not extremely outgoing to strangers and I am not the person who steps on other's toes to get ahead (okay that's a little harsh, but you get my point). To be able to market myself, do I have to be an extremely Type-A, self confident, life of the party type of person? Or I can be a little more quietly skilled, efficient, and friendly person?

Also, knowing that I may not be ble to go the CRNA route has made me think about my other passions in life. I have always been around horses and have often wanted to work with them full time (if not for the lack of $). When I first read about LNCs, I thought - wow, I'd love to be able to work from home (with a horse farm and somebody else to run it while I'm working away from home), as an LNC, and fill in any slow months with per diem bedside nursing. Horses are expensive and I'd also like to live pretty comfortably. Am I under appreciating the work and stress of an LNC? I've thought briefly about benefits (health insurance!) being a problem, but I'm not going to worry about that just yet!

...So I got maybe a little too detailed there! :imbar Anyways, I'm excited to do more research on this area of nursing -- thanks for having a positive and friendly forum that attracts people to this career!

Eliza

PS- rereading my post, I felt I may have made it seem that I think being a LNC is a walk in the park -- definately don't think that!!

HELP!!!! How do I start as a consultant

Hi I am a nurse with 6 yrs of critical care experience in a prestigious manhattan hospital . I have been interested in going into legal nurse consultant for quite some time now. I have not had any formal training yet because I was concerned about spending money on a program and then having a hard time getting a job. I recently applied for a legal nurse consultant job in a law firm dealing with personal injury suits. The ad stated that legal experience not necessary, so I figured great, a good way too start. But guess what, they want to start off @ $15/hr. Thats right FIFTEEN DOLLARS an hour because I would have to be trained, and eventually a raise but not that much. I was appalled, I currently bring in close to $90,000 working a regular 12 hour three day a week job. I didnt even know how to respond.

How should I start off with being a consultant? Should I just do a program? And when I do apply for jobs what salary should I be demanding as a inexperienced consultant, $50 ,$75, $100. I need HELP

Thanks

How do all of you keep your name in front of attorneys who have expressed an interest to use your services in the future? Since I have already had conversations with them, I don't want to send out my original marketing package. But I want to remind them that I am still around. I am interested in what others are doing. Thanks.

I was wondering what constitutes as a good marketing package? What exactly needs to put into it? I already have business cards and business stationary and currently working on putting together brochures. Does my resume need to be a part of the package or does that need to be omitted until the interview?

Any suggestions would be great!!

Thanks
I also see where I could utilize this could be more rounded in regards to versitility in the field. Has anyone done this or have information. If not take alook and see what your opinion is http://nsulaw.nova.edu/online/mhl/index.cfm

Hello!

I am new to this forum...not quite sure what took me so long to join.
Anyway, I am a new LNC. I completed a LNC program through Kaplan approx 2 years ago and did not really put that much time and energy into it. I guess I thought that it would be a little easier to get into than it is. I am learning that marketing is essential. Nurses are not salespeople so it is odd.

I really want this to be the direction that I take my career now. I have been at the bedside for almost 10 years and I am really feeling unmotivated. I love law but cannot afford law school, so this is going to be my passion.
Could you tell me a few things?

I have been trying to read the backgrounds on many of the LNCs. It seems like a lot of them have Case Management, Health Administration, Utilization Review experience. Is this something that I need to try to get experience in first? I have been an Ortho nurse, Progressive care, and now 7 years of CV ICU.

I just feel lost.

I have been trying to read up on all of the resources that are available. Do I need to try to work for someone first before I try to make it on my own ? I was thinking in terms of gaining experience. I have not been privledged like some people that I have read about that just so happen to know someone and that is how they got their big break...I am starting this fresh. I have been debating enrolling in a MBA program that focuses on economical development/entreprenuerialship. Do you think that is necessary? I have seen the business resources that the AALNC offers as well. I just feel overwhelmed with how do I make my first step and once I make it, which direction do I walk in. I just want to try to gather all of the resources that are available and place them in my arsenal. Also, do I need to invest in legal software? I looked some up and it is about a 100 different ones.

I am a hard worker and I want to prove it to someone. How do I convince someone to take a chance on me even though I do not have the experience? I guess that you cannot answer that question :)

Any advice that you can offer would be extremely helpful
I guess that I need to put some legwork in to find a mentor in my area. In your opinion, do experienced LNCs seem willing to help newbies out?

Well, I thank you for your time!!
