allnurses: A Nursing Community for Nurses - Infusion Nursing or Intravenous Nursing

Infusion Nurses or Intravenous Nurses can talk with other specialized nurses in this field. Infusion Nurses provide care to patients by administering fluids, medication, or blood products through injections into patients’ veins or by maintaining arterial catheters. These nurses are also responsible for monitoring patients, maintaining their tubing and bandages, and recognizing potential drug interactions and complications. Infusion Nurses work in hospitals, long-term care centers, clinics, and home health agencies.

We have a few residents and pts at our facility w/ IVs and PICCS, but we do not have a protocol in place for the maintenance of them. I was nominated tonight to come up w/ the info for this to help implement a protocol in our facility. I know what protocols have been used in previous facilities I have worked at, but I'm wondering where is a good place for me to start getting the information in writing? I'm going to start looking when I get home (can't do it while I'm at work), just hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Thank you :)

Infusion nursing is something that sounds very interesting to me. I was wondering if anyone had any advice towards finding volunteering &/or intern opportunities within the field. I just want to get some more experience and want to see if this is a viable option for me to continue researching.

Does anyone know how I can get information from the infusion nurses standards journal?..the latest one??..don't they publish new mags ever year?
I need to know what is the current standard on changing secondary tubing sets.. my facility has started changing secondary iv tubing along with the primary and the flush bag every day now.. it used to be every 3 days... if the patient has a continuous iv infusing then it is still changed everyday.
I am just needing some clarification on this

Hello all!! I've been looking for a hand-held device to help find veins when traditional methods don't work. We have an ultrasound machine (site-rite) that works very well, but it's a bit of a pain to stop your work and go get the machine, etc. There are a few hand-held devices on the market and I'd like to know if anyone is using them. There's even one on ebay for only $20! I may just spend a few bucks and purchase it to see if it works. Does anyone else have experience with such devices?? Thank you!! :paw:

Hello nurses,

My son receives infusion therapy for a chronic disorder every two weeks in a pediatric infusion center. We're hoping to transition to home based infusion therapy at some point and I would love to be able to do this myself. In many countries it is common for patients to self-infuse this biological without a medical professional on hand, and I suspect it will become more so here. But I've also been trying to figure out the next phase of my life - my training is in research genetics, but I have no clinical background.

How much retraining would it take for me to become qualified to administer infusion therapy in a home setting? How many years of nursing school? Are there hierarchical levels of infusion therapy, some of which can be done by someone with a lower level of training, or do you need to be a full-on RN so you are qualified to handle complex situations as they arise?

Please excuse the naive post - I just need to know what the realistic options are. I would love to be able to work with chronic disease patients.

How long can you use mdv and sdv?

I have been out of the hospital for a while, and I am in an outpatient infusion suite in a private doctors office.
I am questioning when to get rid of single dose vials of NS, and Multi-dose vials of heparin flush for ports.

We mix our own meds, so we have 50ml vials of NS and sterile water. each vial takes 10ml to reconstitute, so we will re-enter the 50 ml bottles through the day until it is finished. At the end of the day, if I have any open vials I throw them out. Some of the nurses save theirs......

Also, we have a handful of patients with implanted ports, when we ordered the hep flush, it came in a 30ml multi-dose vial. Each dose is only 5ml. How long can we use this once it has been pierced? I am thinking 30 days?

Thanks in advance for your input.
