Does anyone know what the CNA state exam for SC is like? I've read that some states use actual residents, and others administer their exams in the classroom and use other students. I start the CNA class in January and am just trying to get a feel for what I'm in for.

Thanks! :)

Does volunteering as a CNA gonna help me find the job easier?

I am a new grad CNA and already applied lots of places but still didn't receive any call back yet cos I never work in my life before so I don't have any work experience at all. So I'm planning to volunteer as a CNA in the NH or Hospital for a while. So my question is, if I volunteer to work at the NH or Hospital does it help me get the job cos by then I guess the people there would know me well and how helpful I am. Is this volunteer method would able to help me get the CNA job? I just hope that after I volunteer to work at their place for a while and they would hire me cos I am a very hard working person. But for now I'm planning to volunteer at this NH cos it closer to my house.

Please let me know is this method gonna work or not!!!

We have the favorite experience thread going, I'm looking forward to reading more of those. But it's been a pretty wierd week and I don't think my story quite fits in there. So tell us your wierd ones!

Mine is this... I work night shift, largely on the LTC floor. So I don't often see everyone up, with hair done and teeth in. A PRN nurse asked me who someone was and I couldn't tell her. Had to think about it a bit before I figured out who that little white haired lady in the wheelchair was.

But thinking abou that later on (and this is the wierd part), it occurred to me that while it may take a bit to recognize someone up and all but I could probably tell you with a whole LOT of accuracy who was who by recognizing crotches

Probably 90% of what I do on my shift is brief changes, mostly on people who don't/can't talk and are very drowsy. Last night was all about poop and I went home really reconsidering my choice of life at this point. But the other aides I've told that to totally get the funny, normal people, not so much ;)

Hello, my name is Eric. I'm aspiring to be either an RN or a paramedic, but seeing as I am too poor to attend college, I'm taking a CNA course as a stepping stone into healthcare. I volunteered on the busiest floor of a major hospital two summers ago and I thoroughly enjoyed helping the RN's and the CNA's, so I am happy to be in this course. :D

However, my wife and I have a few reservations. My mother-in-law, and LPN, told me that Maine has some of the toughest CNA reqirements in the nation (180 hours classroom instruction, 50 hours of clinicals). However, I'm curious if this offsets the cost of-- wait for it-- $950. On top of this price, students are expected to buy their own scrubs, stethoscopes, blood-pressure cuffs, and take a CPR course, which will add $50 to the final price. The cost of this course will end up running over $1000. I am truly thankful to be involved in this program, but we have a family of three subsisting on about $11,000 a year.

Does this price seem unreasonable? How much did any of you have to pay for your courses?

Thanks in advance.

Two places we are looking into are Mercy Hospital & Allied Services.
They appear to be the only program around here offered on weekends but I have never ehard of them and can't find any reviewes on the program other than the ones on their website.

I think the Red Cross program has a better reputation but it is offered days and nights.

So guys and gals, during my clinical experience there were many new and exciting smells i was exposed to (first time in my life I changed a diaper believe it or not). I did not gag, and it did not interfere with my work, but it definitely made me want to get out of the room a bit quicker, and that is not the approach i want to have. What do you all do to deal with those wonderful smells? I have heard of putting things under the nose, what do you use? essential oils? vapor rub? any unique, creative, and affordable ideas are welcome! I think it would be great to get everyones input here just to see what we all do different and the methods we share. Thanks in advance!

CNA position interview, help please

So here is the situation,

I am a newly certified and registered CNA, and have two job...

So here is the situation,

I am a newly certified and registered CNA, and have two job interviews next week, both on the same day. One is for a business position (which is what my bachelors degree is in), then other for a CNA position. Benefits of both - they are both better then my current job.

The business position is much more money and standard hours (9-5). This should allow me to pursue nursing school at night as my current business work has me working crazy hours and i cannot do it now.

The CNA position is full time (72hrs per pay period which is 2 weeks), and is at a 5star medicaid rated facility. My grandma stayed there actually when she got toward the end. great facility, great people, and would give me really good experience i wouldn't get in the business posiiton. Downside - about a 30 minute drive from my house.

So here are a few questions. The CNA place want me pretty bad i feel because of my educational level and the fact that i will be a nursing student. The pay cut is going to be tough. I feel i would need to get like $14 an hour to compensate, which is tough to get as a new CNA. Tough, but not unheard of. Are there any tips for trying to get a higher salary? Any ideas?

So i will interview for both jobs on the same day, but if I got offered the business one i would think i should take it just cause of the pay and the fact that it is som much closer to my home. How should I say this at the end of the CNA interview? If I am offered the position should i just say "I have another offer i need to consider, when would you need my response by?"

Also with regards to the CNA position, it would help a little if it was 40 hours a week instead of 36, as thats like an additional $50 a week. Is there anything i could say about that? Can i ask about the availability of overtime or picking up extra shifts? But the way, the shift is the morning/first shift, so no chance for shift differential (although it is every other weekend so maybe a weekend differential????) Let me know what you guys are thinking!!

California CNAs, I need a little help.

I got my paperwork back from Sacramento with the certificate I need to take the written and skills exams. Here in So Cal, the two vendors who provide the tests are the American Red Cross and NNAAP. The ARC turned me down because the certificate mailed from Sacramento had my first and last name only. My driver's license and social security card have my first, middle and last names. ARC policy is that all three documents have to have the name match exactly.

So to anyone who has taken the NNAAP test: is NNAAP's policy the same as ARC's? Will I have to write the Sacramento office and have them reissue the cert with all three names on it?

I am so annoyed over ARC's policy. At worst, I'll have to wait a few weeks to straighten things out but what a PITA!

Thanks for any info you can give.

At my LTC we have a rehab floor and we also have rehab patients scattered around on our long term floors. It seems like a bad idea. There's usually a huge difference between the patients on the rehab floor, where they're more willing to push themselves, and those that are with the LTC. The ones mixed with LTC treat the place more like it's a hotel.

Does anyone else's workplace do this?
