Is it worth applying to grad school right after graduation?

I graduate in May 2010, and for the first time in my nursing career I feel very passionate about advancing my education in Community/Public Health Nursing. I always knew I wanted to go back to school I was just unsure of what I wanted to study or when I wanted to go back to school. It wasn't until my community clinical rotation where I felt that this is what I wanted to do. I know most master programs require at least 2 years experience, however I have been a student nurse tech for 2 years in in the float pool, had a externship on neuro icu, and had the opportunity to be on different units and clinical sites throughout my area.

My question is: Would a school even consider me even though I technically have not worked as a RN? A lot of people I know work before applying to a masters program. However, with the economy and all, I wanted to start applying now, graduate in May, and hopefully start school and work in the Fall?

Any information would truly be a great help!

Hi Everyone,

I am thinking about applying to Frontier's Midwifery program, but I am trying to figure out if this is a realistic goal. I have one young child and one on the way. I currently work 24 hours/week in a postpartum/GYN unit. That being said... does anyone know if you should have Labor and Delivery Experience to do this program. The admission director mentioned that some clinical sites won't accept midwifery students unless they have had L&D experience. Has anyone had any trouble with this? I am also concerned about the fact that I have to find my own preceptor. We have a decent amount of practices in my area, but I have never heard of a Frontier midwifery student at any of the practices. Lastly, does anyone know if you can work part-time and care for two children throughout the program including the clinical portion? I have to continue to work a least 24 hours (12 hr shifts)/ week to have my hospital pay for part of my tuition. I am feeling so overwhelmed and excited trying to figure out if I can make this happen. This is my dream and I was so excited to find out about Frontier. I think it is my only hope of advancing my career unless I want to wait 18 more years ;) Any advice would GREATLY be appreciated!!!!

Thanks,
Leslie

Anyone heard anything about no more masters degrees?

I'm in a BSN-RN program and one of our instructors mentioned how supposedly, there will be no more MSNs - everyone will be required to get doctorates, sort of like what happened to the physical therapy profession (they all have to get doctorates now). She said all existing MSNs and masters degree nurses will be "grandfathered" in, but for any of us looking to go into advanced practice, it's going to be a lottttt more school.

Is this true? I'm assuming it is seeing it came from one of my most knowledgeable professors, but it just seems weird to me. If it is true, does anyone have any info on new requirements/when this is going into effect/etc.?

Confused... worried... needing info!
