Clinical Anxiety - when does it pass?

I get anxious over clinic. Part of it has to do with the day-long care planning the day before, part of it has to do with the clinical itself. Being a first semester student, every time I see something new and it sucks not knowing how to respond. Learning as you go can be enriching but its also pretty stressful considering the seriousness of it.

Im just wondering, when do you get to the point where you are confident enough in your skills that you dont get anxiety when Clinicals roll around.

Actually scratch that, alot of it has to do with the pre-planning. Getting to the hospital really early so you get a patient, then getting 2 care plans done by midnight so you get some sleep.

If you would'nt mind giving a quick break-down of what its like to be a CRNA and how you got to where you are now that would be great. Thanks.

35% of the students in my accelerated bachelors->BSN program are male. Obviously, this is higher than the national average of 6%. And it is probably just a fluke. However, I am wondering if the economy might be driving more men into the "second career" accelerated programs. Has anyone else heard of a higher than average percentage of males in programs just commencing?

hey guys, I'm 27 years old and a Paramedic transitioning to RN. So I go in the other day to take this ATI transition test, Fundamentals- fine, Child-no problem, Maternal newborn- BOMB. Jeez louise, despite not having a uterus or kids I managed to do fine on the interventions, foundation and all that. I did terrible on the Comfort portion during labor. They had questions about rhythmic stroking of the lower back for pain and there was one i was particularly confounded by:

Which statement shows that your client understands the amnio procedure

1. bs
2. bs
3. I understand i will have to drink 3-5 glasses of water prior to the procedure......hmmmm
4. I understand my bladder will need to be empty for this procedure

I know that most places prefer their bladder to be full while doing the ultrasound to find the bladder but then want it to be empty during the actual amnio to prevent puncture. So what do they want to hear? It didn't specify at what point the client was making these statements.

Beyond that I had trouble with the episiotomy care, etc. I went in thinking that i was going to receive questions about how to manage emclampsia, breech presentations, etc and instead it was waaaaaay more touchy feely than I had expected. Anyone else ever have this problem? How did you resolve it?

I had a patient who hasnt had a bath for 4 days post-op & foley catheter! I told the husband she needed a bath ASAP to prevent UTIs since she didnt speak english. He wouldnt cause she didnt want one. I offered to let a female nurse do it but she still didnt want one. I tried to convince him its for her health but he didnt seem to budge. In the end, my instructor lectured me about how its my responsibility and not the husbands.

So do any of the more experienced ppl here have tricks to getting patients to do what you want? Especially female patients who are apprehensive about guy nurses? I was entirely professional. This was only my 3rd clinical btw.

A bit discouraged

Hey guys,

I'm a college graduate...

Hey guys,

So here's my background in as few words as possible.

I'm a college graduate with a degree in cell bio and am interested in nursing due to the versatility and advancement potential. I currently work at an urgent care center as a medical assistant, but I also have experience from a med/surg floor as a tech. I was recently accepted to an accelerated RN program at my local community college.

Here's my predicament: I've been discouraged by the majority of the nurses that I've talked to about entering the profession. Most would not recommend it as career that they enjoy. I also really did not like what I saw on the med/surg floor I worked on. Given 14 patients where 8 of them are complete care is not cool. At all. I sort of feel like people will look down on me as a male nurse. The whole "Why isn't he a doctor?". Also, when I go to advising, people look at me like I'm crazy for going in the nursing direction with my current degree in hand.

This is a bit disconcerting because I'm currently torn between waiting it out and becoming a PA or going forward with the nursing profession with the potential of eventually becoming an NP or CRNA. The latter does require experience in the nursing field (duh), but I'm bent out of shape about it because I'm worried I'll be miserable while waiting to gain the experience necessary to move on. Also, if things didn't work out with the advanced degree, I wouldn't want to hate my life.

It is 2 years to a BSN then the extra years for the experience and graduate school. PA school is also a couple years. My grades aren't an issue.

What do you guys think? I feel like most people are discouraging and I'm concerned. I hated my experience as a tech on the med/surg floor. It was simply wiping 8-14 butts non-stop with vitals in between. Will the ICU be different, or will I be miserable? Am I having illusions of grandeur with the NP/CRNA path? I am also male, so I'm very curious if anyone other guys went through the same thought process.

Any advice, encouragement, criticism, etc. welcome. Thanks in advance.

If I were to work the night shift when I graduate, would taking Ritalin to stay focused and alert throughout the night be incredibly harmful/addicting? illegal?
Any input you guys have would be great!

Dear allnurses forum,
I have this issue that has been bothering me. I was in my final semester in an LVN/LPN program in community college and I was dropped from the program. I am so depressed and so disappointed. I put in almost a year of my whole life into it and it is all a waste. Can anyone tell me of an online school that can help me complete the remainder of my curriculum and be approved/qualified to write NCLEX-LVN? I am looking for any alternative to starting another LPN program in another school from scratch. I heard of an online program called Excelsior College but I called them already and they do NOT have an LPN/LVN program. Indiana State University and University of Phoenix are also out of the question because one has to be at least a licensed LVN to register in their programs. I am so sad and discouraged and I don't know what to do. Please help me :crying2:

Big time... I passed it, thank god, but jeez, is this crap really necessary? I honestly was at question 145 and had absolutely no clue how I was doing. When I clicked done/grade I wouldnt have been surprised with a score of 500 or a 1200 that popped up. It was basically narrowing it down to 2 answers, and flipping a coin. This crap in no way is indicative of your knowledge, its absolutely rediculous and just another $$ maker for companies and schools. For example, there was a question about a girl coming into the E.R. with various symptoms, what drug would you expect she is taking? I picked crack-cocaine but come to find out the right answer was paint thinner.... how the hell would anyone have known that?! I never read about the S&S's of paint thinner
